    IE9 W7 64-bit update keeps failing (error 9C48)

I got this windows IE9 update 36.7 mb, but no matter what I do the update fails after restore point is created. It seems I got the same problem as here: Update fails with error code 9C48. - Microsoft Answers but it keeps failing. I tried disabling my Avast AV but no luck. Any ideas how to fix this?

    Hello mystvearn

Sorry you seem to have been missed. Have you checked the Prerequisites before installing IE9 - Prerequisites for installing Internet Explorer 9 and also here - Troubleshoot problems when you cannot install Internet Explorer 9.
Also run the system file checker just incase there are any system errors - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker.

It may also be worth trying the offline installer from here - Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 64-bit Edition and Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit Edition

Thank you for the reply. I already have IE9. Windows tells me to update it which I fail to do. I have already done all that-still does not work. I ended up clean-install the pc

Do I understand correctly. You did a clean install of Windows 7 to repair I.E.9/64.

Yes. Having an annoying windows update icon keeps popping up and saying installing then failed is more than enough for me. Since I do clean install at most 6 months-restoring backups were easy

I have the same problem as the original poster.

IE9 is already installed and running as expected. However windows update gives the error 9c48 and fails to update.

Downloading and running the offline installer results in an error message stating "setup cannot continue as a newer version of Internet Explorer is installed on your system".

A check show that version 9.0.8112.16421 is installed and is the latest version that I know of.

Any suggestions on how to solve the problem without performing a clean install of W7? Not too keen on doing that.

Your anti virus can cause this problem. What anti virus do you use?

I have Norton 360 installed. I have turned off the AV and tried to use the off-line installer with the same result.
