Activation on a new computer

Hiya there folks :)

My old computer recently gave up the ghost, so I went and got a new HP moderately cheap and cheerful replacement. The HP came with W7 installed along with the usual add on, software and general crap that does come with such things.

I decided to install the retail version of windows 7 64 that I had installed on my old (now broken ) computer, the install went very smoothly till it came to activation (this i did expect) it said it couldn't activate on this computer on-line, it then gave me options one of which was to activate via phone, this I did and it activated fine.

I pretty much expected it to challenge me regards the instillation after all, so far as it last heard it was installed on a very different computer.

Everything i now working fine, but my question is this, now that it has been activated on the new computer, if I do a re-install (on the new computer) will I be able to remotely activate or will I have to use the phone again, if so will this cause any problems. ?

Hello Andy!

Since you are using a Retail version of Windows 7 (you are using a Retail version, rather than an OEM copy bought off the shelf, just to absolutely check) then this copy of Windows 7 is not tied to any particular motherboard.

Therefore you should be fine. I am slightly surprised that you had to phone up at all, and therefore it seems likely that you may have to do this again (it may be something to do with installing Retain on a motherboard already with a certain OEM burned into it) but whether you have to phone or not, all should always be well, and you should always be able to sort this out over the phone, should the online method fail.

Thanks for the reply, Yes it is a full retail (not upgrade or OEM) disc and it did activate fine on the phone, as you suggest the HP puter may have something embedded into it that prevents on-line activation.

I don't plan to do a full re-install soon but will bear that in mind.. thank you

Hello Andy!

Well, you have the correct disks and licences, so there really shouldn't be a problem. Your HP computer will have a SLIC table embedded in the BIOS to help with OEM activation, and this is the only thing which I assume is causing the problem.

Anyway, as far as I am aware, you should always be able to active over the phone should the online method fail.
