    Windows update question, and problem.

When i go to my windows update tool that automatically checks and installs the updates, the tool has a Red Shield with White X in the middle and says the following:
"always install the latest updates to enhance your computers security and performance"

and there is a button that says: "check for updates"

so i push it and a pop up windows says: "windows update can not check for updates, because the service is not running. You may have to restart your computer"

now Ive restarted my computer 4 times and still says the same thing, Ive gone through all of the trouble shooting gadget and gone to the Microsoft website help and can not find anything at all that helps me with my issue.

Can someone please explain in good detail of what the issue is and how to fix it. Thank You.

I have a few thoughts on wht it may be, like could the Microsoft server be down for Maintenance?

    Demonicon welcome...

    * How long have you been unable to get updates on your Win 7 computer?

    * Check Update History > what is the date on the last entry?

    * Tell us about your settings for installing updates.

    * Did your computer come preloaded with Anti Virus Software?

    * List all the Security Software you have on your computer.

    Please do the following:

    * Start > Search box > services.msc > press enter

Background Intelligent Transfer Service should be configured to have > Start up type > Automatic (Delayed Start) > Apply / OK

    Service Status > Started.

    * Check for updates again & let us know the results.

Well i havent been able to update now for about a week, i tried everything.

um i just checked the history and the entire page is blank, there is an OK button at the bottom, i know i remember there being update history there, whts going on?
i did wht u said, it change nothing, with the whole services thing, ive set it how u siad here, im using Avast antivirus, full paid for version, i have avg link scanner. thts it, the history was there even with the anti virus installed and the link scanner, could the problem be a virus? or malware?

oh and i still cant get it to do anything past wht i said in my first post up top.

EDIT: ahaha ok i found the update history
the last date anything was updated is: October 17th 2011, and there are 6 updates mostly security updates

EDIT 2: ok nvm it was the 28th october 2011, so today?

To confirm > your latest updates were October 17th 2011 all security updates & now installed.
    Is that correct?

Are you aware that Windows updates only come out on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
It's also known as Patch Tuesday.
On rare occasions (if a security vulnerability warrants it), Microsoft might release a patch out-of-band (meaning not on patch Tuesday)... doesn't often happen.
