    Problems with windows update

    Guys,

Just getting started with Windows 7 and downloaded the RC 64bit build 7100 from microsofts website last week.

Trouble is, I cannot seem to access windows update, it returns an error code.
I tried a complete fresh install in case the first install was a problem (wiped the drive and refomated) - there is nothing else on there installed, no drivers - nothing - just standard windows package

First thing after I loaded windows was I tried to get the "live essentials" - click the download button - after a few moments of trying to get the wlsetup-web installer - I get "internet explorer cannot display the webpage".
I go back and do a double try again which activates the wlsetup-all installer - same problem
I try with my laptop using XP SP3 and IE 8 running through the same connection and within 4 seconds of clicking the download button, I get the window asking me to run or save the web installer - so it isn't the ISP or internet connection.

Try to update windows via control panel and after about 3 or 4 minutes it returns "windows could not search for new updates" error code 8024402F
Recent check for updates - never.

Here is the section in the WindowsUpdate log file in the windows directory: Apologies for the length

    Code:

I've sussed it guys - and you are not going to believe it either!
Read article upon article from microsoft and they tell you to disable 3rd party firewalls (which I have none) and ensure that windows firewall is turned ON.

I thought, what the hell, turn it off, ok unprotected for a while but as soon as I switched the inbuilt firewall off - BANG "There are updates for your PC, they will be installed as per your schedule" - I then proceeded to the windows LIVE essentials, click the download button, and there it is "run or save file"

I thought, this can't be! Microsoft releasing an OS build that blocks its own website and updates! - I turned on the windows firewall again and everything ground to a halt - updates stopped, and trying the live essentials again it was back to "website not found"

I also don't know if one of the latest updates "sorts this mess out". But it seems that someone in MS needs their arse kicked!

p.s. Anyone with a direct link to MS kindly send them my greetings

Thats really odd man. I just tried enabling Firewall and trying updates and they work. You might have a faulty exception somewhere preventing you from connecting.

Windows Firewall is a joke anyway. haha.

As an experiment, enable Windows firewall, but disable Windows Defender in Services. Does the same thing happen?

To Jacee - Yes it behaves the same, and then lists the previously found updates and the windows LIVE downloads also fail to download

To everyone - this problem has been bypassed by installing a 3rd party firewall and turning off windows own built firewall.
Not sure why this is happening - I have tried all the fixes suggested here and others on other sites including those relating to Vista also.
I have updated windows but none of the updates seems to solve the problems...Maybe this has already been fixed in the RTM release

I've had this problem on 2 machines, and the fix was to disable "Active X filtering" in my Linksys router.

My connection runs through my ISP supplied modem, not though a router. I have since had my cousin over running vista, and she can find updates with no trouble at all through it. Perhaps my ISP has something to do with it, but why only windows 7?
Anyways, no problems since turning off the windows firewall :)
