Ah - we did indeed cross in the post :)
You will need to enable viewing of Hidden files - in the View tab of Folder & Search Options, under Organise in Windows Explorer.

I tried again with the settings changed to show hidden & system files but still nothing. I also tried searching for the logs file as well as any other .logs and .persist.logs.

I'm not sure where this systemroot folder should be, but I certainly can't get the files to show up :S

p.s. Looks like you're scottish? I have some Scottish Heritage, spent two months there, two summers ago

%systemroot% is a system variable - it usually points to C:\Windows.

If you copy the following into the Search box, and hit the Enter key, it should take you there
    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS

    if that fails, try
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Ooops - sorry, must have missed the notification

The Tool didn't find any problems.
Please try the Check For Updates again - when/if it fails note EXACTLY what the message is, and post back
Also check the Event Viewer - post back with any related errors in either the Windows Application log or the System Log

Hey, thanks for replying again :)

Sometimes I see an error associated with Windows Update failing, sometimes there isn't one. I'm pretty sure I have seen more than one error code as well.
    It's currently trying.

    Going through the event viewer:

    Code:

This might help. Check and make sure to time and region is correct. Also check and make sure your Windows 7 and Microsoft products are validated Genuine.
