    ...at the end of which scan? SFC?? - that's not an error I'd associate with SFC, but with WU (it simply means that the connection with the server dropped for some reason).

    Yes, the steps for Win7 are the same as for Vista.

    It was the error at the end of the Update. What's SFC?

    Windows makes you use their crappy browser? I don't know if it's the default to be honest. What the heck is Babylon search anyways? :P

    Sorry - I spend a lot of time telling people to use SFC, but it seems I've neglected that in your case :)
    How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
    Please run SFC /SCANNOW and post the SFCDETAILS.TXT file (see the article for how to produce it) as an attachment - it could be a few MB in size.

    FWIW, I'd uninstall Babylon Search (use Programs & Features in the Control Panel - AND Internet Options> Programs>Manage Addons) and any other Serch options you don't recognise.

    If you open IE, it will usually ask if it's not already the default.

    haha no worries, I will do that as well.
    I am still attempting an update after manually making IE my default.

    Then I will try the other link you shared as well as the system file checker (although I think I've done this in the past).


    I can't seem to remove Babylon search, although I disabled it.
    I'm beginning to wonder if this is tricky malware that is escaping Microsoft Security Essentials. I think I remember Google Chrome being changed randomly with Babylon.

    Babylon Search isn't malware - although it may seem to act like it, as it's not exactly well-written.
    You may need to think about using HiJackThis or similar to get rid of it - but that's for another day :)

    Oh ok. A lot of other sites were calling babylon malware, so I thought it was.

    I ran SFC. "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir/Logs/CBS/CBS.log. For example C:/Windows/Logs/CBS/CBS.log"

    However, when I try to open CBS.log I am told access is denied?

    CBS.log is permanently in use by the system, you can see the results by following the instructions in the article I pointed at (you *really& don't want to try wading through the full file!)

    If you want to check for malware, which is never a bad idea, I recommend Malwarebytes Anti-malware - www.malwarebytes.org free edition.
    Download the installer, run it, then update it.
    Once it's updated, it will offer to start the RealTime Protection module - DO NOT accept the offer as it may interfere with your AV.
    Then do a full system scan in your main profile/user account and Quick scans in any other accounts on the machine.

Windows Can't Check For Updates Automatically
in Windows Updates & Activation

Getting error code: 80070005 I have made sure I am logged in as administrator. Also tried rebooting PC, modem and router. Done Malware and Virus scans. I'm also having trouble installing updates from online services. I think these problems are related.
