Hm, the installer of the x64 version is telling me the data is invalid.

    Edit: Error 0x800700d.

I got the logs last time somehow?

The logs were posted on page two. I'll run it again, I'm not sure if it's possible for it to change.
Duh! - I looked at them, as well, and still couldn't see them! - there's no point in running it again, as there was nothing amiss last time.

The 0x800700d error is 'data Invalid' - which can mean a multitude of things.

    back in a bit

    Thanks so much :)

It's strange that I could run that installer once but not the second time.

Sorry - I got sidetracked, dealing with a very similar problem elsewhere (failed there as well, so far)

From data in the two threads, this problem appears to be something in the registry - or possibly in the data-collection routines in the vbs file.

How to track it down I really don't know at the moment.

Unless you feel up to a repair install, I really think there's nothing else to do except try MS WGA Support for assistance, and hope they have some idea of what the problem is.

WGA Support can be found here-
    North America: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_genadv_master?ws=support&ws=support#tab4

    Outside North America:
    http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support#tab0

Please let us know if (and how) MS manage to repair the problem without a repair install of the OS - it would be useful for future reference!

Possibly found something... I was reading this:
You receive error code: 0x80070646, error code: 646, or error code: 1606 when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update

The last subkey it mentions to check is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

I don't have "appdata" at all. In fact, this list is much smaller than the others. Should I add this in?

    Edit:

here is everything that is in that subkey:

dang. That website is misleading :P

I tried using a registry fixer, it found a lot of errors. But when I fix them, and run it again, they are all back.

Something else I've come across is this site: How to fix Windows Update | News | TechRadar

I attempted this: Hold down the Windows key and hit 'r' to bring up the Run command box. Type 'regsvr32 jscript', then 'regsvr32 vbscript', and finally 'regsvr32 /i mshtml', making sure to select 'OK' each time.

Initially I got some java error, so I went and updated Java.

Then they started working until the third one when I got:

The module mshtml was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

Make sure that "mshtml" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again.

    hmmmm

This may have just fixed it, from the techguy forums:

Go into Windows Services, and stop the Windows Update Service (don't disable it, just stop it).

Control Panel (classic View) Admin Tools>computer management>Services.

Once it opens, scroll down to "Windows Update" double click it and hit the stop button in the window that opens, when it stops, click OK and then close the services window.

Now navigate to this location and delete the folder "SoftwareDistribution"

    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Restart the PC and see if WUP works now.
