First, check that teh file system and disk are OK
type in the Search box CMD.EXE right-click on the only file that is found Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up At the Command prompt, type CHKDSK C: /R and hit the Enter key You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient! After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC SFC -System File Checker - Instructions Click on the Start button type in the Search box CMD.EXE right-click on the only file that is found Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up At the Command prompt, type SFC /SCANNOW and hit the Enter key Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot. You will have seen that the SFC command leaves a log - please upload the CBS.log and attach it to your response (You will probably have to copy it to the dektop first) |

IF SFC found no errors, then it's unlikely that the log idle would be much use anyhow -
download and install the CheckSUR Tool - Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 post the log at the end It may also be worth running an MGADiag report (for my interest more than anything else - it's not essential) (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 ) Once saved, run the tool. Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report. To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool and paste into Notepad - post the result |

(Hi Richard - this is one for you, I think!)
The MGADiag report shows no anomalies - not that I really expected it to, since you weren't also complainning of a non-genuine status. I'll leave you to the WU expert's tender mercies ![]() |

Thanks a lot for getting both of the logs, and checking out the MGA Diag report. I can't read those things! Anyway, hopefully SURT will reveal all...

Hello again!
Yes, that is where some logs are located (although only a few of many), for there are very many logs in very many locations all over Windows. But that is the log I needed! WARNING! This fix was created specifically for this user! If you are not this user, do not follow these instructions! @kidakaka: Ignore the above ![]() Download the attached .zip file. Inside it, will be two folders, Packages and Manifests. Create these folders if they do not already exist: C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages\ and C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\winsxs\Manifests Extract Packs.zip onto your Desktop. Please place the contents of my Desktop\Packages in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages\ and my Desktop\Manifests in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\winsxs\Manifests. DO NOT place the .zip file in that folder, or the folders themselves. Make sure that a lot of files are in each of those Checksur folder. NOTE: For you, there are no manifest files. This is fine; just ignore the Manifests section. Re-run the System Update Readiness Tool, and get me another copy of C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log. Also, please retest Windows Updates (with fingers slightly crossed, no matter how much we both know that that won't help! lol.) Thanks a lot, and the very best of luck! Richard |
