I don't think that a 250 mb update increases the hard disk volume by 250 mb. If that were so how could we have slip-streamed SP3 into a single Windows XP installation CD.

However the choice to update or not is entirely yours. For a normal user it is good to update but an expert user friend of mine never updates and heavens have not yet fallen on him.

Those updates replace many files, so you aren't using an extra 250 MB, once the update is complete.

That being said, if you are worried about running out of space, then you need to re-evaluate the size of your primary partition.

It shouldn't be every day, and it shouldn't be taking up more space.

It isn't a bad idea at all, to make sure your OS is patched and updated. As I mentioned before, if you are concerned about running out of space, your system volume may be way too small and could be hurting your performance.

Generally it's only once a month. Though for "emergencies" it can be more often.

As long as you practice safe computing habits, you can easily go without most updates until they all come out in a service pack if you want.

But you DO need to be conscious about what it means to secure your system and safe Internet practices if you do that. You are in full control of what when and where the updates come from.

Updates by Microsoft are usually put out once a week on Tuesdays. The day is called Patch Tuesday in geek lingo. It is quite right that sometimes an important patch may be released on other days if it is urgent and vital.

Patch Tuesday is only the second Tuesday of each month, not every Tuesday. Updates released on other Tuesdays are out of cycle, and so are a response to an emerging threat.

As others have said, updates are the 2nd Tuesday of the month. They only come out sooner when it's an emergency.

I believe in the updates, no doubt. Many a compromised system have been fixed by patches that came out a long time ago, but some don't feel the need to keep their systems up to speed.

Over time, the OS is going to simply get bigger as more patches come out and additional pieces of software are installed. If your OS drive is too small, this is going to have a much larger impact on you. Personally, I wouldn't run with a C drive of less than 60GB.
