Upgrade or new key for Msdn copy of win 7 ultimate x64

Good evening, a few months ago I bought a custom build computer from eBay. It was advertised as having win 7 ultimate x64 OS. I was a little suspicious about the legality of the win 7 as the computer came with a copied disc and no official packaging. The thing is the chap who sold me it is abut of a computer whizz/ licensed ethical hacker/computer security chap.the computer worked fine for three months After a recent windows update the screen went black and several pop ups say the windows isn't genuine. I contacted MS. They stated that the win 7 I was using was a MSDN copy not for home use or resale. The update had recognised this and blocked the key. The chap who sold me the computer says he bought the software legit but has refunded me £50 towards a new licence/key.

My question is can I just buy a new key for the current OS and hope it will start working fine? I was going to buy the win 7 ultimate x64 from 'software4students' but it says that you can only upgrade from an existing genuine version of windows OS on your computer. Is the Msdn copy I have installed classed as genuine or do I have to start over?? Thanks in advance

As Theog says, if you purchase a new Full Retail license for Ultimate (from a reputable source - not eBay, Amazon MarketPlace, Craigslist, or the like) you can simply change the Key to your new one, and it should work fine.
If you want confirmation that the current license is non-genuine by reason of being an MSDN Key, look at the Product ID on the System properties page - it will have a second group of characters in the region -064- to -069-.

If it's anything else, it should be OK - so post an MGADiag report for analysis.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
    - **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Thanks Theog & Noel. I'll paste the diagnostic shortly. The strange thing is although the current OS shows windows build 7600 not genuine, other than the occasional pop ups and black screen it appears to be working fine. I was under the impression that it would no longer update but windows update is working fine. So Im
not really sure what consequence there is in continuing to use the current Msdn version?

Since Vista RTM, the penalties to the end-user of having non-genuine Windows have reduced considerably -
In Vista RTM, the system wuld only allow access to IE
In SP1, the system would allow access to the desktop, in a reduced functionality mode
in SP2, the system allows access to pretty much everything, but will not update with anything except Security updates.

In WIn7, the system allows access to almost everything except non-security updates - but MSE if installed will become non-functional after 28(30?) days of non-genuine-ness.

It's up to you whether you get genuine or not - but I really do recommend doing so.

As you were informed, teh Key in use here is one issued specifially for a subscribers to the MSDN netowrk - as such, the only person entitled to use it is the owner of the subscription.

This Key has been blocked, either because (most commonly) there has been a charge-back on the credit card used to purchase the account, or because there have been too many activations on the account

MSDN subscriptions entitle the owner to a number of concurrent installations using the same Key - at one time the number was ten, but I believe that it's lately been reduced to five. The system works in such a way that frequently it will allow anything up to 20 installations before crying WOLF!. The counterfeiters take advantage of this, and will sell as many licenses as they can get away with without breaking the limit, but since the subscription includes everything from Win95 (and even windows 3.11) to Windows Server 2008 Rev2 SP1 together with Office licenses, they can make a fortune on each subscription before they are found out - this can take anything up to 18 months. They will then flood the market with Keys in an attempt to cash in, and then run, leaving many clients in the lurch - and the sales medium (e.g. eBay) ends up having to foot a considerable bill for refunds.

Hope this makes some kind of sense in your situation, and explains why you weren't initially notified of the problem.

It does thank you very much. At least the chap who sold me it was kind enough to refund me £50 towards the it's of a new key. My wife is a doctorate student so will buy replacement key in 'software4students'. Hopefully will work fine. I was concerned as the website states " this windows 7 version is an upgrade version only. You must have a current valid version of windows operating system licensed to your computer to perform a clean install using these editions"

I wasn't sure whether the madness version I had is classed as a 'current valid version licenced to my computer'.

    No - it doesn't.
Your computer is based on a Retail (FoxConn) motherboard - and has no SLIC table as a result.
Depending on the type of license you purchase, it may look for the presence of a SLIC table - and if it doesn;t find one, it may refuse to activate.

As far as I am aware, all Student licnses are Upgrades - which means that you are required to have a valid pre-existing license from which to upgrade.
Does this machine have a COA sticker on the case? - How to Tell - Home
If it does, then you are entitled to use an Upgrade version (so long as the sticker is for XP/Vista/Win7) to install the OS.

If it does NOT have such a sticker, then you must purchase a Full Retail copy of Windows to stay within the licensing rules.
