I don't think mixing a retail upgrade over an OEM install is a good idea, but it should have continued working.
That is *exactly* the purpose of an Upgrade.

The upgrade wasn't bought from HP, it was picked up from a store.
Please check the file permissions on the tokens.bar file - open a Command Prompt window, and issue the following command
    ICACLS %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform /T

Copy and paste the response into your reply - to copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Oooops - sorry - must have missed the notification!
That output is fine - it shows the permissions appear to be correctly set for all files in the folder, and that you've successfully run the Licensing store recreation twice.

I'll get back to you shortly

(I had to refresh my memory of the thread and check a couple of things).

Let's recap on what I understand is your situation.
You purchased this machine with Home Premium installed.
At some point, you purchased an Upgrade to Ultimate.
All Upgrades are Retail pretty much by definition - the only exceptions are a) the Free Upgrades from Vista for machines bought immediately before and after the launch of Win7, and b) Upgrades installed before they leave the factory.
Was this an Anytime Upgrade, or a full Upgrade with discs and a box?

What happens if you attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate ? It may give some more information, or give another error message that is more meaningful that what we currently have.

I mis-spoke earlier when I said that you needed to use the Key from the COA sticker on the machine - you need to use the Key from the Upgrade box, or from the AU package (the Key on the COA sitcker will only work for Home Premium) using the SLUI 3 command.

If that fails (make sure that you're using the right one), then I can see no reason why SLUI 4 shouldn't work with the existing Key, so that you can at least talk to an operator with an activation code to hand.

If it doesn't work, then I can only suggest that you try contacting your local Volume Activation Center for assistance - they are for Volume licenses, but will assist if you ask nicely :)

    Patience is a virtue :)
Seriously - most of us in these forums have lives to lead and wages to earn, so it can take a while. do NOT 'bump' your thread, as it actually discourages people from responding (thye think someone else already has)
There are only a couple of specialist in CheckSUR reports - I know just enough to be dangerous, and not enough to be any good (as I proved a couple of times)
They look in when they can - meanwhile the machine will chunter on quite happily without the updates until you do get a response.

    Anytime.

It would appear to have fixed the problem.

All the really complicated steps we've taken, and it was that freaking simple. Gotta love troubleshooting.
