Can anyone suggest a method of speeding-up the installation of Win7 updates?
I have a fast processor, 12gig of RAM, I am running Win7 Pro x64 but the install/configuaration of Win7 updates is taking days to complete? Luckily, I can log into Windows but during the day/ bootup and shutdown the PC takes ages doing the updating etc.

Make sure that you have the correct drivers installed - specifically the chipset drivers.
This sounds as if you may be having problems with hardware - have you checked the Event Viewer or Performance Monitor for issues?

I have just updated the firmware on my SSD as this was causing 'freezing' issues but this seems to have sorted that.

All seems fine as far as I can assertain. Have checked my chipset drivers and they are up-to-date.

I was going to suggest the purchase of an SSD but as you have one then the excellent suggestion of double checking all key driver updates, bios updates and hardware firmware updates is a sound idea. I'm glad things a moving quicker but it does seem that even the internet download speeds of these occasionally huge updates also play a role. Sometimes it a good time to go get a cuppa !
What other software is installed and running at startup?
Is the System disk drive running properly ? (check Device Manager for the Drive itself, and the controller)

As mentioned previously, all drivers up-to-date and SSD running fine according to Device Manager. I upgraded the firmware on the SSD only yesterday.

Ah sorry Noel, at startup I have latest Bitdefender as I've changed from Kaspersky and I also have started running MalwareBytes.

residuals can cause problems such as you are seeing - you will also need to run similar tools for any other AV you have had installed on that machine.

Having only just re-installed Windows, I never loaded Kaspersky Internet Suite with my subscription only having three weeks to run and most reviews seem to say Bitdefender is better??? Don't you believe this is so?
Your comments on this would be welcome.
Also, what software would you personally recommend for defence against malware and would you recommend anything for keeping the registry in good order? I have used 10bit for years for both jobs but many on here say 10bit can be rogue software?
