Reinstalled windows 7 32bit over 64 bit - windows not genuine

***QUOTED ANOTHER POST TO START NEW THREAD AS INSTRUCTED***

"I am having a similar issue. I have purchased a laptop computer from Walmart Thanksgiving Black Friday 2010. The deal was good, so I bought it not noticing it was for a 64 bit copy of windows. I was having problems getting the computer to work in our office, so after much research I determined I needed the 32 bit copy of windows 7. I popped a disk for windows 32 bit in the computer and it automatically started to copy the needed files to install the windows 7 32bit edition. It stored my old settings in a windows.old folder, so I figured this was something really cool that Windows had coded to allow someone to quickly change over to a 32 bit OS. Last week I get a message that my copy of windows is not genuine. I tried entering the code on the underside of my laptop and it stated that it was for a different copy of windows.
The problem I am having is I now have a working laptop with windows 7 that has been working fine for a long time. I don't want to have to buy a new OS license. Does anyone have any help that isn't going to involve running the pirating program as I don't intend to use something illegally.
Any help is much appreciated."

I have downloaded the program as instructed and will post results soon. Thanks for prompt reply.

to validate/activate it, you need a different license key, the one from the 32 bit windows 7 disk, the 64 bit key only works with the 64 bit version that came with the laptop. it likely won't work with a generic 64 bit install disk either, the original mfg. supplied OS restore disks may be needed. also if the current 32bit is home premium, you need a home premium key, if it's professional, you need the professional key. they are not interchangeable.

if it is a multi-license corporate install disk, or a corp. technet version, your IT manager should be able to give you a working key.

if it is from another pc that has been validated, it's not legal to install on 2 pc's at the same time.

i wish you luck.

P.S. - it is possible to restore the original system os x64 version, see this linky. subst. windows7 for vista where mentioned, as needed. results not guaranteed.

Well, I appreciate your help on this. I think it is shady that it allowed me to install over the other copy and never once warned me to put in a license key. If anyone has a means of reachgin someone from Microsoft on the telephone, I would greatly appreciate it, as I have no intention of going to the 64 bit version since it conflicts with the work setup we are currently using and they may be able to swap with me.

Try Cleaning the HD Drive, using the CLEAN command (no need to use CLEAN ALL) in Step One in this tutorial:
SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation
Do not partition or format.
Than clean install with the OEM manufacturer's 32 bit Recovery Disk.

There are a number of problems with the report.
1) The Key in use is the OEM_SLP Key for a DELL computer
2) It looks like you used a Dell Recovery disk for the install.
3) The BIOS is dated August 2009 - which could well be pror to the release of Windows 7, which therefore would not have the Win7 Marker in the BIOS that's displayed in the report.
4) You have a non-genuine installation of Office
5) the installation is 32-bit

You need to revert back to an HP version of whateer the appropriate OS is for your computer.
For what version of Windows is it licensed *according to the COA sticker on the case*?

If it's Win7 Professional, then simply change the Key to the one on your COA sticker using he link at teh bottom on hte System properties page.
If it's anything else, then you will have to acquire the recovery disks from HP (they may be able to provide either 32-bit or 64-bit on request), or find a proper Retail disk for whatever the COA version is.

Noel,

Wowzers.

It was originally as posted just above the diagnostic report , but the COA sticker has Windows 7 Home Prem OA - HP

I guess that might be the root of the problem is that I used a windows 7 32 bit professional (Dell) to install over a windows 7 64 bit home premium (HP)
I will look into the office settings as that sounds sketchy too.

Where to go from here? Like I said, it would be great to stay at windows 7 32 bit and not have to purchase another $200 worth of OS just to be genuine. Also, I have many things on the computer that would be annoying to say the least to reconfigure if I had to do a fresh install of an OS.

Thanks again to all for your help with this.

As I said, if you can borrow or download a Retail Win7 HomePremium, you can use that together with your COA Key to reinstall.

Or

You can contact HP and see if they have a set of 32-bit Recovery disks for your system (it would be a good idea to get the 64-bit set if not, anyhow - for future use)
They usually charge <$50 for them

What makes you think that you're better off with a 32-bit system than a 64-bit system?

The Office Pro install is *definitely* non-genuine - the installs for the other parts of the system (Visio/Project/FP) may well also be non-genuine, since they depend in part on the Office install.

Our office uses Office Access 97. The ODBC Settings weren't working well with windows 7 64bit.

If I locate the original disk for my computer, what type of reinstall work am I looking at? Will it overwrite my current OS and keep my programs the same so they become the x86 programs in a 64 bit OS? Or am I looking at a fresh install with complete reconfiguring of all programs to hopefully get things running as well as they are now?
