IE 9 update: Do I need it?

    Today WU presented IE9.

I don't use IE (I use Firefox), is there any compelling reason why I should install IE9 over IE8?
Would I be missing any performance or operational features in Windows if I skipped IE9 and just hid it?

    Drat!!

I just went to WU and noticed the same thing. I'm also on FF.

I hope the answer is that it isn't needed.

It's a personal choice as far as I'm concerned. With MS IE9, it's thier attempt to catch up with the rest of top most used browsers with looks and speed. If you haven't noticed...all the top browsers have pretty much the same look and feel. To be honest, I quite prefer IE9 and use it as my main browser, then chrome followed by FF. I do switch from time to time just to mix it up a bit.

I had been offered IE9 a while ago. I think it was listed as important but WU did not keep telling me I have updates to install. I too got it offered yesterday and and I see it was (re) issued Jan.17. I wonder if thay made some changes.

So now unless I hide it WU will continue to show as needing me to update .

Well the real question is, how does it affect other programs that use the Micorsoft trident HTML rendering engine?

Updating to Ie 9 updates trident, but what I am not clear on is if the older version remains and therefore programs built on it remain unaffected or not.

So it may be worth installing to get the new rendering and increased safety for other programs even if you don't use IE itself. Or it may be better to not update in case it may break those same programs somehow. Hard call...

(BTW the same issues exist with programs that use the FF embedded HTML rendering engine as well and faced with FF updates)
