Restart=This copy of windows is not genuine

    Hi All,

Recently my sons computer started coming up as non-genuine, but only when he restarts it. If he cold boots or logs off/on, it starts up fine

I have Windows installed from my Technet licence, so the software and product key are valid.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Tanya

    Hi Tanya,

Please run this tool, then copy the contents and paste it here in your next reply. We might be able to diagnose the issue from the details in the file.

    to expand a little....
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
    - **in your own thread**, please

Please run the tool while the non-genuine notification is showing.

Such problems as you describe are often the result of a race condition, where two or more programs battle for resources. If one of the programs involved is wither part of the Software Protection system, or a file monitored by it, then the system can show as non-genuine until either it re-tests, or the system reboots and avoids the conflict.
Such problems are extremely difficult to isolate, as merely looking for them alters the system sufficiently that they do not occur (until you turn your back again!)

Thanks for the info. I actually found the problem late last night while googling it. I came across someone who had the same problem, and it turned out to be a "licence repository" problem. Rebuild the lince repository and all is well.

But I ran the MGAdiag tool across the PC and it said it was an OEM version, and it says the same thing on mine, but I used the Technet keys that came with my Technet subscription. Go figure.

Anyway, the rebuild took 15 minutes and so far it hasn't complained again. I'll monitor it for a couple of days (often these things look like they're fixed and then they mess up again..).

Please post the report anyhow - I suspect that there's something else going on.
TechNet Keys for all Windows 7 except Starter are Retail - Starter is OEM.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

The problem got fixed before mgadiag was run. We are not having any problems with the non-genuiine issue now.

But because Micro$oft has reduced technet keys from 10 down to 2, and limited the number of activations, I thought I better make a new image so that I can restore the system should the problem occur again.

But I can't seem to get an image out of Windows at all.

So I'll post a new thread in the backup and restore sub-forum.
