So my friends were messing around on my new laptop, (it doesnt have recovery disks) and they upgraded me to a counterfeit Ultimate. How do I go back to Home Premium?
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I know that's a rhetorical question.
It just proves that Microsoft's marketing tactics have worked. Any fool knows that "Ultimate" anything is "better" than "Premium" anything.
Just as 600 of anything (such as watts) is superior to 400 of anything (such as watts).
Add in the "getting something for nothing" factor and I'm not in the least surprised that there seems to be more Ultimate installations than Home Premium installations on this forum---particularly from neophytes.
I may have missed something. somewhere - but NO-ONE here has suggested that Ultimate is a significantly 'better' option than any other edition of Win7.
Ultimate is useful under certain very well defined circumstances - a requirement for BitLocker and/or multiple languages - otherwise it's a waste of money and/or resources.
My preference would be for Win7 Pro - but since I have a 'free' License for Ultimate, I tend to use that, although for the past few months I have used Home Premium with NO issues or lack of functionality that means anything in normal terms.
This is one way to do it. UNAWAVE - Downgrade Ultimate to Home Premium or Professional I tried it and it worked for me. My brother in law bought a couple of Ultimate product codes on eBay, need I say any more.
I am the one who made the comments about Ultimate being better. Reason being, his friend felt it was worth going from a legal licensed copy of Home Premium to Ultimate. Lots of people made this mistake. "Hey, you wanna free copy of Ultimate instead? Oh yes, that would be awesome".
I would NOT have paid for ultimate myself. I just got my copy of windows 7 ultimate for free by attending the New Efficiency launch seminar when Windows 7 was released. With my own money, I would have chosen professional.
