Why is Windows Update not offering me SP1?

I have just reformatted and reinstalled Windows 7 Professional using a DVD that was purchased in January 2010. I have also accepted numerous Windows Update installations in the course of, I believe, 2 or 3 runs of Windows Update.

Last time I reinstalled (about 4 months ago), I believe I directly downloaded Service Pack 1 and installed it. This time I tried to see what Windows would recommend via Windows Update. I note that the Microsoft website says that Windows Update is the recommended way of obtaining SP1.

I am not being offered Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932). Does that mean I don't need it?

Have you checked to see whether it has already been downloaded?

It'll tell you in System Properties under Windows Edition - just press the Win+Pause key combo to see it.

You can also check which updates are installed by checking your updates history or viewing installed updates in Control Panel>Programs>Uninstall A Program>View Installed Updates.

Windows+Pause key shows that I only have Windows 7 Professional. There is no Service Pack 1 present.

At this point there are about 30 updates installed, mostly KB.... type of updates. All of them were received via Windows Update.

Microsoft do say that if you are having trouble getting SP1 via Windows Updates, you can download and install the standalone SP1 file.

Download: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Make sure you choose the right version for your operating system.

You need the second from bottom download in the link.
