I went to Administrative Tools/Services, and stopped the Update service. I then went to the folder c:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution and deleted all of the files and folders. I then went back to Services and restarted the Windows Update service which recreated all of those folders again. I then went and manually ran the Update Service and everything worked. Both computers are fine.

What a relief!
Thank you, it solved my problem too.

Window 7 Professional 64 bit

I know this is an older post, but I am having the same problem as the original poster, and unfortunately, his solution did not fix my problem.

My internal hard drive recently crashed, which I replaced and then re-installed Windows 7 from my recovery disks from 2010.

Now Windows Update won't start. I get same message that original poster got.

When I had to re-format my old hard drive about a year ago, Windows Update found several hundred updates and installed them, so I'm sure I need several hundred again.

Hope someone out there can help ...
