Unable to download and install updates on Windows7 x64

For the past 18+ days I've been unable to download and install updates on Windows7 x64. I've tried all the trouble shooters and the update readiness tool, I've sought and received advice from windows answers to no avail, 14 days ago it did allow some updates but now its insists that IE9 on IE is not downloaded when I can see it is and all the time I keep getting Error Codes 80073712 and 9C48 , I've attempted and failed on at least 21 times now and every time it looks like it may make it but then it fails. Please if anyone has any info please let me know as the the response from Windows is pathetic.

Hi Nigel,

Have you installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7? Also, could you please try the following, if you haven't already done so:

Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working

Also, could please post you full system specifications using this tool:

Hello Nigel and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since I'm not sure which troubleshooting steps / articles you've tried, my apologies if I'm repeating something you've done.

Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - WindowsUpdate_dt000

Run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan at least 3 times, rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Possibly try a restore point if it goes back far enough (prior to when update problems first started.) Or if no restore point is available possible repair install.

Hi Golden and Marsminar,
Thanks guys for coming to my assistance, especially Golden as you came in first, pity I dont have name for you both, but anyways heres what I've done tonight. First I have service pack 1 installed and second I tried Mr. Fixit again without success (I have tried him several times before), although this time I did think it was going to work as it seemed to take for ever. I downloaded the System Specs gadget and hopefully you have received my data, your end as I hope I pushed the right buttons.

OK. Can you please try the sfc /scannow command that Lee (marsmimar) auggested, by following the tutorial he linked for you?

Hi Golden,

I've tried the suggestion from Lee i.e. SFC /Scannow now at least 3 times and it seems to improve performance somewhat, but it does state that it has not been able to fix a corrupt file/s, at least I managed to get 3 updates down and installed and they are recorded as such, however it it still states I have 5 updates to install, so you might think I'm back to square one, but my PC seems to running faster and I'm sending this to you on it, by the way its a netbook. Also when I shutdown it shows updates to be installed during shutdown, it varies from 1of 3 to 1of 2 and once it stated that it had to 30% of installation. I dont really want to go down a clean install road and cant seem to get system restore to fully go through. Any more tips from you will be welcome.

Hi Nigel,

The update during shutdown is normal, and you should let that complete fully without interruption.

So, are there still updates pending? If so, do you get the same error messages?

Yes, when it down and installed 2 updates it stated 1os2 to be installed on shutdown but since then its reverted back to 1of5.

Microsoft has released a newer System Update Readiness Tool that fixes a few more issues than the previous version. Might not hurt to run it.

Also, have you run full antimalware scan(s) on your computer, especially with some free on-demand scanners like Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, Superantispyware, etc?

Hi Fellas,

Well guys I'm afraid the news is my problem goes from bad to worse, I downloaded and begun installing the R2 version of KB947821 and it seemed to take for ever , however it got to about 50% installed and stayed there all night for at least 4 hours and did not move, well I had to shutdown now today it wont proceed past the initializing stops dead. To make matters worse my PC keeps locking up and takes ages to move on it is just not responding, also the task manager which I've been using to get things opening and shutting fails to show what is running. All the slowness and problems seem to occur when the Windows Update icon appears on the task bar. I' ve got Malwarebytes installed and have run it several times along with Windows Defender and Spybot.
