Windows Update cannot currently check for updates.....

    That does surprise me - I would have expected your machine to be showing as non-genuine if the Intel RST drivers were the problem.

    Thank you so much for this.
    It saved me from renaming Software Distribution and the other folder which I don't remember the name of. (Which first method didn't work for me, so I would have had to go for second, which would erase my download history etc.)

    This is why I love this forum.
    I can check the internet, Microsoft, etc., but the best answer is always here!

    Not really - I think it's a conflict in the registry which flipping the status sorts out, but I've never actually gotten my sweaty hands on an affected machine, so I can't say for certain (even if I could find the flipped entry!)
