Okay, validation failed. Wanted me to buy Windows.

"Files that Windows needs to work properly have been modified, removed, or disabled. To resolve, you need to install genuine Windows."

I do have a repair disc that was made when I installed Windows 7 if you think that may fix this problem.

Went to diag and it passed all of those.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows folder. find the System32 folder there, and right-click on it - select Properties.

In the General tab, clear the box beside 'Read-only (Only.....' by clicking in it until it's empty (it cycles around three values)
    Click Apply.

Accept any warnings that come up - if you get a 'Ignore/Ignore All/Try again' option, pick 'Ignore all'

Once complete (may be almost instantaneous), reboot,

    then repair the Licensing Store:

    Recreate the Licensing Store
    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sitcker on eht machine's case
Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

This will not run any validation. Slui.exe gives me an error stating that windows must be reinstalled. If I run Slui.exe 3 and put in the key I have on the Upgrade disk, it tells me that this key doesn't work with this version of Windows 7 and I must purchase a key that will work for $109 of which I have $0. The only other thing I can think of is that I have added 2 pieces of hardware to my system since I first installed Windows 7. Do you think that maybe disconnecting those 2 things will help?

I doubt very much that the new hardware is causing the problem. - what is it?

I never asked - how certain are you that the system is now clear of infection?
Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org) free edition
Update it, and run a Full scan in your main account, and quick scans in each other account.
    Delete everything it finds.

It may be a good idea to run a rootkit search as well - try TDSSKiller from Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller

Post back with your results (it's bed-time here, now)

The hardware I installed is an addition CD burner and an additional hard drive.

I already have the PRO version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on my computer with protection enabled. I ran the full scan on my account, which is the only account, and it found nothing.

I also ran the Anti-Rootkit utility and it also found nothing.

I have even run a full scan with Avast Antivirus and found nothing, just as an added check.

I'm starting to think that a call the Microsoft about a new key, even though this one is supposed to work on this computer, may be in order.

Just to let you know, I was trained on hardware in the mid 90s. However, all of my software knowledge is self taught, or picked up from forums like this. I really do appreciate the time you have spent on this. If you are like me, a challenge like this is actually fun, even though it is extremely frustrating.

There's nothing wrong with the Key as such - it's the supporting software that has a problem.

Did you ever get around to running a (purposeful) CHKDSK C: /R ?? - if not, please do so, as it's likely that the automatic one that ran itself was only a file scan, rather than a full scan (you can see the results in the Event Viewer Application log, filtered for Wininit events)

Did you run the SFC /SCANNOW?
Even if so, please do so again, and attach the CBS.log file to your response.
It's looks to me as if there's a case of creeping-sickness here, and that's usually either malware or disk problems.

Well, CHKDSK /r did not report any type of errors. The original chkdsk, which I think was the attack, did make some security changes, at least that is what it reported. I could not stop it from running, even before it started. It made changes to a File 9, whatever that means, and then it made changes to the "security codes" for several files, changing them to the default is what it said. It never named a file, only gave file numbers. As I said, I am sure that was the attack. Maybe this information can give you more to go on as well.

    I have attached a compressed CBS.log file.

There's nothing amiss in the CBS.log file that I can see.

It's unlikely that the CHKDSK was the attack - it's more likely that the system crashed as a result of the attack, and that the disk was left in a 'non-approved' state, and it's that which forced the CHKDSK to run.

OK - I'm left with little option but to go for the surgical strike now (which I always try to avoid, as there may be no way back....)

BACK UP TO EXTERNAL MEDIA FIRST!

then run the following commands from an elevated command prompt....

    NET STOP WUAUSERV
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution C:\Windows\SoftwareDistributionOLD
    REN C:\Windows\Catroot2 C:\Windows\CATROOT2.OLD
    NET START WUAUSERV

    reboot TWICE
now run another MGADiag report and post the results.

That's why I added the second hard drive, it's my backup drive.

I did have to do things a bit differently. It would not let me rename a directory from the Command Prompt, so I did that with Windows. Also, the catroot2 is under the system32 directory. It did recreate those directories during the reboots.

I think I am beginning to see the problem. Just looking at some things not system related, I have a lot of files and folders that have been set to read only. I can see a lot in the Windows that is locked this way as well, but I don't know which folders should be locked and which ones shouldn't. Is there any place I can get a list or something that would tell me this?

Actually, it doesn't seem to want to let me change the read-only status with these files. I tried it on some that are not system related and they will not change. Hopefully this is info that will help.
