WIN7 7601 error on GENUINE WIN7

Acers are fine once you replace the factory preinstall with a Clean Reinstall and never again rely on their abysmal "tech support" parody troupe.

You don't need them anyway since you have us now!

You can skip Steps 1 and 2 in Clean Reinstall tutorial, and be mindful that it is written for factory OEM as opposed to retail Upgrade which you have. So references to the COA sticker on machine do not apply - you will use the key on the disk packaging.

But the principles in the tutorial apply to getting and maintaining a perfect reinstall so study them and feel free to ask back as many other questions as you have.

I have spent the last two days printing out many instructions and links and lots of reading. BEFORE I do a ‘clean all’ and then a ‘clean installation’ with win7, I have some specific questions that I would be most grateful if you could explain to me in the simplest of terms possible. I have highlighted these in red text. I am most nervous about STAGE 1 and want to make sure I cross all the ‘T’s’ and ‘i’s’ and make no mistakes. Smile

STAGE 1: “Clean all Diskpart Command”.
(a) How do I check to make sure that the ‘set the BIOS to have the CD or DVD drive listed first in the boot order?’ Instructions needed please.

(b) Will “Clean All Diskpart Command” (b1) remove all partitions back to one ‘disk 0’, including corrupted recovery partition that has no designated ‘letter’ (or access to it) yet is a part of ‘disk 0’ - or (b2) will this just clean all 4 partitions on disk '0', including corrupted recovery partition and keep the 4 partitions? I am confused here.

(c) Please look at posts 28,29,30 on Thread link Advanced Boot Options Do I need to be concerned about this? I don’t really understand what this all means, is this important or completely irrelevant seeing as I have a Win7 disc? Will I loose my 'F key' functions by removing corrupt recovery partition?

If answer is (b1), do I need to remake the partition BEFORE going to stage 2 installing Win7? If so, how do I do this as there will be no OS on the laptop– or can this be done in Win7 after install?

(e) I cannot find the referred ‘green box’ in tutorial for more information about ‘clean all command’.

(f) When doing ‘clean all diskpart command, do I select ‘Disk 0’? My computer management read out is in post 51. (sorry, it won't let me re-load this on this post)



STAGE 2: Clean Instalation with Windows 7.
(a) Will I need to check ‘‘set the BIOS to have the CD or DVD drive listed first in the boot order again?’
(b) What does the 100mb system reserved do – should I make sure this is selected?

As far as the 'System Reserved' partition is concerned, Windows will generally take over that option itselfand create the required partition by default, unless you have already created and formatted partitions filling the whole drive.
You shouldn't need to worry about it.

...as for what it does, it's the 'bootstrap', by which Windows knows where the Operating system you want to use is installed, and gets the OS kickstarted. hopefully you'll never need to know more than that :)

Just tap the Acer F12 key repeatedly at boot to get a Boot Menu, choose DVD drive to boot. It's easiest. You do not need to do this when the installation reboots.

Use Diskpart Clean Command which cleans the boot sector of any possibly conflicting code:

Diskpart
List Disk
Sel Disk 0 (confirming by size this is your HD)
clean
exit
Click Install Now

You don't need to worry about creating the System Reserved partition yourself or whether it will link to F8 menu. Either create partitions as you wish during install or just click Next and let the installer create/format one large installation partition and begin. Ignore the System Reserved partition completely.

There isn't any other HD so you have nothing to worry about in choosing. If it appears as it does in your screen shot then you will Select Disk 0. If it has another number and you can see that it is the HD by its size then choose the number which appears for that HD.

Okay, I just want to make sure i have understood this correctly.

(1) Do I first close disk management before going to number "2" that will 'clean' (remove) my OS?

step (2) With 'Elevated Command prompt', I follow instructions 3-7.

(3) Then what happens as OS is now removed, is stages 9-10 still applicable or not? OR do I -
(a) turn laptop off and restart with Win7 disk inside and follow clean installation instructions OR
(b) don't turn laptop off and insert Win7 disk immediately?

Ps. does the laptop need to be connected to the internet throughout these stages? I share the internet, so will need to know.

Run Diskpart after you have completed all of the backup and other preparation steps.

Place the DVD in drive, boot it by tapping the Acer F12 key at reboot.

Access the Win7 installation DVD Command Line by pressing Shift + F10 at first screen when DVD boots. Otherwise access Command Line in System Recovery Options.

Hi Gregrocker, I have just read through the instructions again and again, and now get it (I think) that in order to 'clean' the whole disk '0' (my hardrive); I need to do this as a 'command prompt from Boot' with my Win 7 disc - Yes?

So my Win7 disk will stay in the machine throughout the 2 stages?
