    Getting non-genuine windows message; have had cpu over a year


    I have had a Compaq CQ62-219wm for over a year; however, now I get a message indicating that my Windows 7 Home Premium x64 is not genuine. Upon downloading a key finder software, I noted that the product key has "Trial" indicated (in spaces 6-10). Could this be a result of not activating within 30 days? My service protection is enabled.

    The Product Key in use is from a Dell computer

    It looks to me as if someone has reinstalled this machine using a Dell Revocery disk, rather than a Compaq one.
    Have you had anyone service this machine, or leant it to someone?

    You need to change the Key in use to the one on your COA sticker, using the Change Product Key link on the System properties page.
    You may then need to activate by phone.

    Once complete, attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate and see what happens.
    If you pass, you'll be offered IE9 and MSE - you don't have to take them!

    post back with a new MGADiag report so we can see what if anything has changed.

    Thanks so much. However, not sure how I will rectify the situation. It was serviced but I may be powerless to change the subsequentone install because the sticker where the code should be, has faded.

    In that case (unless you can read the sticker with a bright light and a magnifier, you really have only two options....

    1) contact Compac/HP and order a set of Recovery disks (which is what the servicer should have done) and reinstall from that

    or

    2) see if you can persuade MS to part with a new Key -
    There *may* be an alternative solution though, if you are patient and persistent.
    Attempt Telephone Activation, and speak to an operator - they will tell you that your current Key is blocked (they should then ask for confirmation of your Product Key). Explain to them your problem, that you need to change the Key to the one on your sticker, but that the sticker is unreadable (could they please supply a replacement Key?). Hopefully they will ask for documentary proof of the sticker, in the form of an email with a picture of the affected sticker - and you can proceed from there.
    Sometimes it takes two or three calls before you get an operator who actually knows and uses this procedure - but I know that it can and does happen.
