Windows Update - Installs Same Updates On Shut Down - 0% Stuck

Ok over the past week or so windows has been installing the same 3 updates every night! Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit

So I checked to see if they failed and they were installed successfully!

I have ran 3 different MS Fixit things to no avail. I have tried to update the PC manually however it does not go past 0% on installing the updates it just says preparing updates.

I tried adding 2 optional updates to make it 5 and manually clicking update however it sticks on 0% downloading updates.

I am usually pretty good at troubleshooting and fixing PC problems however this one I am defeated! I do not want to restore if possible, will this take away ANY of my files e.g work I have done I have never had to do it before!

However if someone can suggest a fix without having to restore that would be great!

    Thanks in advance!

    Ok something new,

I tried some more fixes I found online I tried deleting the contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to no avail.

And also ran a program which reinstalled WU and all its .dll's etc.

Now I have a different problem it wont search for updates it says searching then stops and say error "8008005".

Tried disabling AV and FIrewall (Avast, Comodo and MBAM) and ran scans on all of those including SUPERAntiSpyware.

I only have one system restore from around 5 days ago when the updates were just reinstalling and i had no errors.

Should I restore to that or try and fix this error (which i have been looking how to with no luck!)

    Thanks
    Ash

    Yes.

You should restore to a restore point from before the problem occurred.

A real source of problems is Avast, Comodo firewall, MalwareBytes, and SuperAntispyware ALL running on your computer

You do not need a single one of them.

All you need is MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials--link to MSE in my signature.

First uninstall all of those, then immediately download and install MSE.

MSE is the one, the only internet security software that I use, the only one I install, the only one I recommend.

I'm in good company--such names as Fred Langa and Paul Thurott give this advice and use only MSE on all of their computers.

    Hi,

While I am thinking about it I tried disable all my AV's etc and that did not fix my problem.

They all don't run all the time only Avast and Comodo actually run together I use the other 2 just for a scan.

    Thanks

Uninstall each and every one of them.

A disable doesn't take their fingers out of the pie.

Thanks again for the quick reply!

I have uninstalled them all and installed MSE as you advised!
The first scan is currently running what would be my next step if I still receive the error after a reboot?

    Thanks again

I have to say, when people say AV and firewalls get in the way I usually disregard it.

However it seems to have worked.

Firstly it was checking for updates for a long time so i was skeptical. However it found 17 updates. Then it was stuck at 0% downloading so I thought, fantastic another problem! However I started typing on here and checked back and they were done downloading and now are installing.

I am gob smacked that the AV's were the problem as I was reading an article yesterday saying all of those were the best to work together which is obviously wrong.

A quick question though I have read reports about MSE not picking up on as many viruses as avast, avira and avg etc is this just a way to get people to download that product or is MSE not as good?

Thanks so much I really appreciate all of your help I have been trying for HOURS to get this fixed!!

    Thanks again, really.

    Ash,
MSE catches all anti-viruses. With MSE installed, then automatically, once a month, the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool will be run in case any root-kits got into your system. Normally, they never make it and this is only good for the new MSE install where the Malicious Software Removal Tool is run automatically.

MSE is the same program run on enterprise scales systems where the program is called Forefront and those guys pay the big bucks for what you get for free.

Main matter is that your problem is gone. Glad that we could be of assistance.
