Using live messenger during windows update installation

    Hello

Sorry this might be a dumb question, but will my computer be ok if I opened live messenger and sent a few messges while windows update was being installed on full load on my HDD? I'm kinda worried it would cause some bugs or errors since there was lag when I was typing, opening windows etc wtih live messenger.

Just personal opinion, and others may disagree. I prefer to let Windows Update and other "critical" operations like system images, creation of restore points, etc not have anything else going on in the background. Whenever system files are being accessed, read, or written to, I'd rather have all of my computer's resources concentrating on just that one task. But that's just me.

Yes you can according to Microsoft. I also don't recommend do it that way. I let Windows Updates have their way with my computers. I seam to have less problems that way. When it's done and everything goes well I continue on with what ever.

I generally don't care of what Update is doing. As long as the computer isn't stuttering, I do whatever I feel like doing while it does its thing (even running uTorrent while Update is downloading its own stuff).

I'm not saying you should do that too on a regular basis (I weekly image the entire HDD on another HDD in case I screw up everything, but never ever had to use the backup in years), just that it shouldn't be a major issue.

If I did it once do you think my OS would be ok? I was kinda impatient and msg my friend a few words during the windows update installation, there was some lag on my PC when I chated with him, it was only a few words.

Lag was normal as Update needs some resources, WUpdate is smart enough to not be sidetracked by what the user does (as long as you don't touch system files, that is).
It may not be recommended to do stuff while it is running, but I really doubt doing what you did will have any effect on OS stability and fitness.

You didn't hurt anything. The reason I do it the way I mentioned is simply because sometimes updates get a little testy. I want to make sure my updates go smooth with out any hang up if I can.
