It appears slc.dll is the culprit. But I don't know how to fix this on my own. Can someone please help?

I guess I should have looked on the forum a bit. It looks like others have my same problem. I guess I will look at the solutions there and try to find my way.

    DON'T DO THAT!!
90%++ of the solutions in other threads probably do NOT apply to your problem!

You have a rare problem - a (single) mismatch in the file slc.dll (or slc.dll.mui)

First, please run the standard disk/file checks.....

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
    At the Command prompt, type
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

How long does it take for the SFC scan to finish (I already did CHKDSK before I posted my second response)? Because right now the command prompt window looks like this:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>SFC/ SCANNOW

Microsoft (R) Windows (R) Resource Checker Version 6.0
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Scans the integrity of all protected system files and replaces incorrect version
    s with
    correct Microsoft versions.

    SFC [/SCANNOW] [/VERIFYONLY] [/SCANFILE=<file>] [/VERIFYFILE=<file>]
    [/OFFWINDIR=<offline windows directory> /OFFBOOTDIR=<offline boot directory>
    ]

/SCANNOW Scans integrity of all protected system files and repairs files
    with
    problems when possible.
/VERIFYONLY Scans integrity of all protected system files. No repair operati
    on is
    performed.
/SCANFILE Scans integrity of the referenced file, repairs file if problems
    are
    identified. Specify full path <file>
/VERIFYFILE Verifies the integrity of the file with full path <file>. No re
    pair
    operation is performed.
/OFFBOOTDIR For offline repair specify the location of the offline boot dire
    ctory
/OFFWINDIR For offline repair specify the location of the offline windows d

    e.g.

    sfc /SCANNOW
    sfc /VERIFYFILE=c:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll
    sfc /SCANFILE=d:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll /OFFBOOTDIR=d:\ /OFFWINDI

Okay I did it. And this happened:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 9% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

    C:\Windows\system32>SFC /SCANNOW

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 9% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

    C:\Windows\system32>

EDIT: I did this a few times now. Rebooted after each time after the first two tries. Still get the same message.

I have to admit to not being surprised by that - SFC depends to an extent on the SLC.DLL which is broken.

    Hopefully the following will help...

Your best option in that case is to run the CHKDSK and SFC in offline mode from a Recovery Environment boot.

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

    Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
    - if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
    then type the following command

    CHKDSK <drive>: /R

and wait for it to complete - it could take a few hours, depending on the size of the drive.

    Once complete, type

    sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

    Post another MGADiag report

This won't help but just a question if the computer is only 4 months old how did you mange to lose the install disk? should have been kept somewhere safe for things such as this.

Not trying to pick on you. Have you made or obtained the Backup/recovery disk's for your Computer?

Most computers don't come with 'install disks' - and haven't since around 2005.
It's much more common for them to come with a Recovery partition, from which it may or may not be possible to create the backup/Recovery disks necessary.

I know of one major manufacturer which would appear to be in breach of its contractual agreement with MS by NOT providing proper means of recovery - and refusing to supply disks.
I hope they are refused a license to sell Win8 - but I won't hold my breath on that basis.
