    Not running genuine Windows - Validation Code: 0x8004FE21


    I have been running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell computer for two and a half years. On Monday, a window opened saying "This computer is not running genuine Windows". The MGADiag report is below.

    I went to the Intel web site and ran the Intel Driver Update Utility, which said my drivers were valid. Do I need to update the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers?

    I also loaded the disk image backup of the previous day in VirtualBox as a virtual machine and ran MGADiag. The report showed that Windows was valid and showed no file mismatches or tampered files.

    The only change I made on the computer before the problem occurred was to install Zoner Draw 5. I installed this program on the virtual machine and ran MGADiag again. The report showed that Windows was still valid.

    This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

    Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
    try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

    Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

    Thank you very much, Noel. the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers seem to have fixed it. Since a lot of people have had this problem, would you have a few minutes to explain briefly what causes this problem, or refer me to information about it? Is this due to an automatic update that went haywire?

    I have no authoritative reference, but I suspect that either
    1) Intel used an undocumented command or setting in the drivers which got broken by an update
    or
    2) some settings are corrupted either by malware or an update
    or
    3) the hardware detecton in the drivers isn't properly updated at boot time, and any changes to the system aren't properly dealt with.

    The actual source of the problem may not be in the drivers at all - it may simply be that installing the drivers causes a reset to a registry Key or setting which solves the problem. Unofrtunately, I don't have the skills to track all the changes that are made to be able to see where this may be happening.
