    Just Another 7601 Activation Error

    Hey, everyone. I bought my HP Desktop about 3 years ago brand new. I've never had a problem, but today, a few hours after I started using my PC, I encountered an error regarding activation. My desktop turned black, I got the usual build 7601 not genuine watermark, and a message came up saying; "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting", along with a long message telling me to go to windows site to receive the benefits of genuine windows. When I went to the site, it told me my version of windows is not genuine and that I have to purchase a new license. I've noticed a lot of people having the same error. I'm fairly tech savvy, but thought creating a thread wouldn't cause any harm to see if anybody who knows more than I do about the subject could provide specific help. I've tried to get a copy of the MGA Diagnostic Tool's logs, but it gives me an error that it failed to create an output file. I'll write down what it shows me for you guys;

    We nee to see the FULL report produced by MGADiag - partials are no use to man or beast.

    Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

    Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Hardware.aspx

    Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

    The BIOS appears to have lost its SLIC table, which is required to be able to self-activate teh OEM_SLP Key in use here.
    You need to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker, using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
    You may need to activate by phone.

    I've tried changing the key to the one on the COA Sticker, and I just get told it's an invalid Windows 7 Product Key.

    0xC004F050 usually means that you've misread a character - either C/G/6 or B/8 or Y/V are the most common.

    Note that the following characters cannot be used - A E I L N O S U Z 1 0 - so don't bother trying unless you like the noise it makes :)
    an O/0 is almost always a Q

    I double-checked the Product Key, and I had written down an 8 instead of a B. Thanks very much guys, this seems to have done the trick!
