    Windows 7 cannot check for updates & error 0x80070002


    I am getting the dreaded error: Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running
    I have prowled the boards trying all kinds of fixes but have not been able to get Updates working. Here is what I have tried thus far:

    ---

    I did a complete re-install of Windows but still have the issue. That may be because the reinstall was with my laptop created recovery disk.

    Did not install new anti-virus after re-install and anti-virus can interfere with Updates.

    ---

    I have tried stopping the service, deleting the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and restarting the service. When that didn't work I tried deleting the contents in Safe Mode as well. Still no good.

    ---

    I ran FixIt. It claims to fix two errors with Windows Update but I still get the same error.

    ---

    I ran Malware Bytes but it found no issues.

    ---

    I tried stopping and restarting "Windows Update Service", "Cryptographic Service" and "Background Intelligent Transfer Service", both through services and through cmd

    ---

    I downloaded and ran the .bat Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components

    ---

    I downloaded the Windows Update .reg file and ran Merge.

    ---

    I ran sfc /scannow. Result was that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I ran it again three times (as recommended by some online guides). I created sfcdetails.txt but it did not indicate where corrupt files were.

    ---

    I tried to reregister Windows dlls following the steps here:How do I reset Windows Update components? and got the following results:

    I stopped the BITS service and the Windows Update service sucessfully.

    This command didn't give any result message:

    Got the following errors when renaming the folders.

    I reset the BITS service and the Windows Update service sucessfully.

    I reregistered the files. Most were successful but got the following errors:
    the module "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found
    the module "shdocvw.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found
    the module "browseui.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found
    the module "qmgr.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found
    the module "msxml.dll" failed to load
    the module "gpkcsp.dll" failed to load
    the module "sccbase.dll" failed to load
    the module "slbcsp.dll" failed to load
    the module "initpki.dll" failed to load
    the module "wuaueng1.dll" failed to load
    the module "wucltui.dll" failed to load
    the module "wuweb.dll" failed to load
    the module "muweb.dll" failed to load

    Tried to reset winsock and got an error:
    C:\Windows\system32>netsh reset winsock
    The following command was not found: reset winsock.

    Restarted BITS and Update services sucessfully.

    I tried to run the Update Readiness Tool and got error: 0x8000222

    ---

    The only progress I seemed to make was when I changed Update settings to Never Update, then switched back to automatic update. This gets rid of the error message but instead clicking Check for Updates does nothing. The Updates screen flashes for a second, but nothing else happens. After a while I start getting the error again.

    It may be relevant that Windows Defender will not start. I am able to start it in Services but when I go to Windows Defender it says a problem caused this program's services to stop. When I click start now I get the loading circle and after a while the error This operation returned because the timeout period expired. (Error Code: 0x800705b4)

    I am running Window 7 64 bit, installed with recovery CD from Asus U50F.

    YOu appear to have some major problems - from your MGADiag report, there appear to be problems with at least on critical part of the system

    You also appear to have got one of your commands abive wrong - the proper command is

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET
    (rather than 'netsh reset winsock')

    From memory, the BITS dlls you attempted to register are teh ones for Windows XP, not Win7 :)


    Please try registering the wintrust.dll file - it may clear the MGADiag errors.

    REGSVR32 WINTRUST.DLL


    Please also copy your C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file to your desktop, then zip the copy, and attach it to your reply.

    Thank you very much for the quick reply. Registering the wintrust.dll file did clear some of the Diag errors (see below).

    I had a feeling some of those BITS dlls didn't apply to my system, but that guide was what the Microsoft support forums kept pointing Windows 7 users to.

    OK - now we can see the wood for the trees as far as the MGADiag report is concerned :)

    Please download and install teh WAT Update KB971033 from
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033

    reboot twice, and then run another MGADiag report - post the new one,

    Ok, I downloaded it but I'm unable to install it. The following error box pops up immediately:

    That error code is one digit short??
    I can't find any references that make sense with 0x80000222, either, so please check the exact message

    This seems often to be caused by problems with Anti-Virus programs - what AV is currently installed, and what AV's have ever been installed on this machine in teh past - even if only a trial version never activated??


    Please run the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
    (you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

    Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attah it to your reply so I can take a look.

    The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

    I tried to run SUR but got the same error 0xc800222


    AVG had been installed previously but I did a complete re-install of Windows and did not reinstall it after.

    The Windows recovery did include a trial of an anti-virus program. I think it was McAfee but I deleted it without activating it so I'm not certain.

    Probably either McAfee, or Norton - probably a good idea to run both removal tools if you're not sure.....


    Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

    Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
    Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
    right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

    when complete, reboot.


    Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

    Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

    After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

    You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
    then post another MGADiag report.
