    Windows 7 Activation

    Hey people,

I recently posted a message regarding a laptop of a friend of mine, requesting help.

Now, i wanted to check if the windows 7 were genuine.
So, i went to the validation page of microsoft, I downloaded the program it asked and I run the check. After checking it told me that the windows 7 are genuine.

Thing is, I asked him about it, and he told me that they are pirated. When I asked for more information, he told me that he downloaded a genuine ISO from digitalriver, and skipped the "enter product key" when installing them. Since then, he has been downloading updates etc, without any issues. The only thing he has done is hiding that notorious anti-piracy update from windows update (KB97 something)

Can this really be? Shouldnt the validation check at least ask him to activate the windows?

Might be that he installed it less than 30 days ago by which time(30 dats or something) he would get asked to enter the product key or his windows copy would get shut down.

Yeah, basicly he formatted his PC and then he gave it to me to check some things, so the 30 day mark has not been passed.

Still however, shouldnt the site say that he might be a victim of software courfeiting or whatever?

I went to this site, by the way: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/

It shows this screen (sorry, it is in greek).
    Attachment 237726
A basic translation to english is:
    Welcome to Windows!
Since the windows that are installed to your system are genuine, you can enjoy the security and the protection they offer.

Looks good to me! :) You need to activate Windows though:

Activate Windows 7 on this computer

Follow the instructions labelled: To activate by using a direct connection.

The Key here is the Default Key, which cannot be activated.
All installations will by default pass validation while still within the grace period

The computer appears to have been shipped with Vista installed, rather than Windows 7.
Do you have a full installation package for any kind of Windows 7 (OEM/Full Retail/Upgrade)??

Might've helped if I'd Googled the key first
