Windows 7 service pack 1 will not install

I am trying to install the windows 7 service pack 1 but it will not let me. I have already tried the standalone installer and downloading the service pack directly and running it, but it will not work. When I try to run it through windows update it sits at 0% and I get the error code 80004005. How can I fix this?

That error code roughly translates as 'access denied'

Since Windows Updates and the Software protection service have many things in common, it can be useful to see a copy of the MGADiag report.....

We need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

That all looks fine - so not very informative

Please run the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply.

The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

    Where is the CheckSUR.log file?
I ran the tool and it appears to have completed successfully.

    The log is at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\Checksur.log
there is also a history log - Checksur.persist.log - which isn't needed for the moment

That is one heck of a lot of registry errors!
Have you been using any kind of registry 'cleaner'??

    (f) CSI Payload File Corrupt 0x00000000 wcp.dll x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_0b66cb34258c936f

appears to be the only remaining error...
perhaps we'd better do a more general file scan before attempting to fix that, in case there are more problems....

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
    At the Command prompt, type
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

The log is at c:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log - you'll have to copy it to the desktop before you can to anything, as the file is permanently open.
