Can't get to desktop, build 7601 error

My husband's netbook is having issues with Windows Update. It started out okay, but got stuck at 30%. We tried rebooting, but it didn't help. Currently, he can get to the login screen but then the computer just says 'please wait' and sits on a black screen. I've tried using system restore, but for some reason it was turned off and it has no former state to go back to. I've tried chkdsk but that didn't help. I've tried startup repair but it said it didn't find anything wrong. Eventually, I tried letting the computer sit for a while with the black screen to see what would happen and a message popped up that said that the copy of windows wasn't genuine. I know this isn't true since it came on the actual computer and we ordered the computer from Amazon.com.

Yep lady if you want to run this -
Speccy - Download < download from piriform it will tell you what you have on the machine as kelly says it really needs a few more specs of the system and machine before it can go any further - unless that ref I gave you has done some good.

A screen shot would be handy of the Speccy readout too. To do that go to Start type snip in the search window at the bottom and there will a little blue bar open at the top of the Start window > right click on it and send to desktop or if you can pin to taskbar (is better)
Click the snip the screen will turn milky and you just drag a border around the screen part needed and go to File > save to desktop as whatever you want to call it.

When you reply go to Manage attachments and browse > click on the snip off the desktop and hit upload it will add that snip to your reply post

To answer the first question, the netbook is a Dell Inspiron Duo and yes I can get into safe mode, but not the normal desktop. I'm currently in Safe Mode with Networking.

    Hi,

You need to run the MGADIAG report in Normal mode, not Safe Mode.

I suspect that the problem here is file corruption, more than anything else - possibly induced by buggy software.

Since the user cannot boot successfully to Normal Mode, the problem is likely to be corruption of the User account.
I would suggest going into Control Panel >User accounts, and creating a new User (Administrator) account, and then attempting to boot to that account in Normal mode - and see what happens.
If that fails as well, then try a CLean boot...
