Errors 800B0100 and 8024200D installing updates; KB947821 installed

Lately I've been getting these errors trying to install updates. The "automatic troubleshooter" just seems to reset the updates database to null and give me a green light. The updates still won't install. I searched around and found KB947821, downloaded Windows6.1-KB947821-v25-x64.msu, and ran it. It ran successfully but it doesn't help. I also turned off my security suite (Norton) but that doesn't help either. I did more searching around but I'm getting nowhere with this problem. Thank you for any assistance.

Please attach your C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file to your reply.

Which downloads are failing, with what error messages?

The only error messages that I have are the codes in the title of the thread. I don't know which codes go with which fixes, because I tried to install all at once.

    Requested file attached.

You have a total of 105 errors showing in the CheckSUR log - and I should imagine that there are going to be more problems, in view of your failures, as the regstry is very likely impacted as well.
I would favour a repair install as the proper way to go here.
First, please ensure that the filesystem is in a reasonable state - Tom may like to take on the challenge, even if I don't :)

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

    CHKDSK ran clean.

SFC /SCANNOW ran with "no integrity errors."

I tried Windows Update again: failed.

It bothers me that when I click on "Update History" in Windows Update, the only history that shows is after I ran Microsoft's "troubleshooter." I think the troubleshooter just wipes out some databases so you can start afresh. Not even KB947821 is showing in the history; it did before.

    Zip file attached.

This is normal - the MS troubleshooter will reset certain folders, and as a result the Windows Update Historyfile goes AWOL.
    it's nothing to worry about!
The CBS.log file shows no obvious problems.

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply.

Same 105 errors as before (except that now you know I did it with a clean system).

    Log zipped and attached.

I was hoping that something would have changed - but apparently it was not to be
The question now is whether this is within the realms of viability for a manual fix or not, as there's a distinct possibility of further problems showing up when/if we do manage to fix these.

If you *really* want to avoid a repair install, then I can try to fix these, and see what happens - otherwise, I do think that the repair is the way to go.

Go on, let's give a fix a go! 6 updates is a lot to fix though! This is probably the worst 80B0100 log I've ever seen before.

    Windows Update Package Replacement

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

    1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
    2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
    3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
    4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
    5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

      C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

    6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

      C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

    7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again
    8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

      C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

You will probably be shown the error code 0x8024200D after performing this fix, if so, please download and install the update from this link. It must be downloaded using Internet Explorer.
