    Windows Not Genuine Build 7601

    Hi all

I'm a newbie to this forum and do not speak computer tech language - please be gentle and advise in simple terms. I hope I'm in the right place.

I have a problem with my daughters laptop - "This copy of Windows is not genuine Build 7601" appeared in the bottom right corner - since then the laptop has slowly deteriorated in performance and has become incredibly slow, almost dead. Nothing seems to run on it properly - no programs, no internet or very very slow to load- Nothing appears to respond well. Its hit and miss as to whether it starts up properly.

The laptop is 2-3 years old and came with pre installed software - it is a Dell and was bought direct from Dell.

Prior to this the laptop worked fine. I'm using a separate PC to post this thread. Also I do not know how to run the various diagnostic reports mentioned in threads so will need simple instructions

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Trevor

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Hardware.aspx

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

You can copy the download from your current machine on a USB stick, run it from there, and save the report in Notepad for copying back to the working machine.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

    sc sdshow plugplay
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18" /S
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-19" /S
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20" /S

Copy and paste the results to your reply

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

    Bless you.
I had the same problem before. I chucked the Laptop, and bought a new one.
You can't fix it, you have no hope. I wasted 300£.

Trevor, if you bought the PC from Dell there is a COA sticker on the bottom or under battery with a Product Key you can insert at Control Panel>System activation link.

This will always work on factory OEM, and since you bought it direct from Dell it's unheard of that it would be bootleg. Have you contacted Dell to ask them about it?

If problems persist you may have deeper problems with your install remedied by copying out the files to run Dell Windows 7 PC Restore which will self-activate, or get the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

    Thanks gregrocker

I have the product key number - if I insert at Control Panel>System activation link what does this do and how does it fix the problem? - Do I lose any files /software?

I did speak with Dell who suggested your point about a system restore but that would mean I would have to re-purchase the software that is currently installed as I understand it would essentially restore to factory settings - They did say they could fix it for big $$ ££

No, you don't need to buy another copy of Win7 which came with the PC and which you own for its life to reinstall in what ever way you want. That's why MS requires they provide the COA sticker, so you can use the Product Key to even Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 without the corrupting factory bloatware.

That Product Key can also reactivate the OS you have now if it's not corrupted beyond repair. Try inserting it now. If it still presents problems, post back any error message and work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 or if unbootable Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

Or you can go ahead with running Recovery from link provided or do the Clean Reinstall.

What about software such as MS Office or Norton security etc - Do I lose these?
