    Win 7 x64 SP1 Update Failed, Error Code 80070002

    This one has me boggled. I've searched high low looking for a solution to this issue without any success thus far. As the title of the thread say, I've been unable to install SP1.

    Link to my CBS directory (zipped): https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resi...6E21F538FA!107

    SFC /SCANNOW reported no errors.

    Let me know if you need anything else and thanks for the help.

    The error message says, "Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

    There's no sign in your CBS.log file that SFC actually ran.
    an 0x80070002 error is actually a 'File not found' error, and often means that a registry entry is pointed in the wrong direction, rather than that a file is missing.

    Is your machine showing any other signs of problems?

    Hmmm....I may have run SFC after using SURT. I don't know if that would make a difference, so I reran SFC and then SURT and uploaded a new zip file.

    I'm having no other problems. This is the only update that fails. I consider myself to be a fairly savvy PC tech, but this one has me stumped. I've updated my system specs as well.

    I do appreciate the help.

    Your CBS log is huge - 62MB of data (360,000 lines) generated in 20 minutes!
    I would normally only expect that amount of data in a few weeks, even with a couple of SFC scans.
    CheckSUR found no problems this time either - and the SFC scan was clear.

    What Anti-Virus are you using? what other AV's have EVER been installed on this machine?

    lol.....I had wondered about the size of the log file myself, but had no idea what size a normal log file should be. I am running Symantec Endpoint Protection (version 11.0.5002.333).

    No other AV has ever been installed, but I do run Emsisoft's Emergency Kit periodically.

    Edit: So what would cause the log file to be so large?

    That's an Enterprise product? (Endpoint) - How have you acquired/licensed it?
    (At least it's not Norton!)

    There is a large area of the file which appears to me to be doing a full evaluation check on the updates and failing at some point - My CBS-reading skills are too limited to be able to tell exactly what's going on.
    I'm very tempted to do a full WU reset, clearing the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders..... now, there's a thought...
    Please post an MGADiag report - it may show some errors which will help diagnose the problem.

    Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

    Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Hardware.aspx

    Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

    Yes, it is an Enterprise product. My workplace provides it to all employees for home use.

    Windows version and edition from my COA sticker:

    OK - you asked for it :)

    Step 1. Rename the Windows Update temporary folders:
    ====================================
    1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
    2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop CryptSvc
    ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
    ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sold.old
    net start CryptSvc
    net start wuauserv
    pause
    3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "rename.bat" as the file name and save it to the Desktop.
    4. Return to the Desktop, right click the rename.bat file and choose "Run as administrator".
    5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.
    Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved.
    Step 2. Run Microsoft Fix It Tool 50202 to reset Windows Update components:
    ====================================================
    1. Please download the tool from the following link:
    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683
    2. When the file download window appears, please click "Save", and follow the directions to save it to your computer.
    3. Locate the downloaded file and double click it to run the tool.
    4. Follow the steps in the wizard. When you are prompted, please click to check the box before the Aggressive option.
    5. After it is finished, please restart the computer.
    If it still does not resolve the issue, let's proceed to step 3.
    Step 3. Run the System Update Readiness Tool
    ====================================
    1. Please download the System Update Readiness Tool from the link below according to the System Type:
    System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 32-bit
