Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x80070bc9 - Looping

    Hi all,

    System: Win 7 Prof 64 bit SP1.

Automatic updates went into loop few days ago, when the installation of optional update KB2506143 failed. Log files had several entries with 0x80070bc9 error. Inspite of hiding the update the problem persisted.

Tried lot of microsoft fix it's, few other stuffs and the current state of the computer is,

    a. After I login into the system. Windows update says, "Check for updates for your computer" with RED Check Mark. Always install updates to enhance your computer's security ....
    b. When I invoke "Check for updates" button. After sometime, it shows, "Restart your computer to install important updates. Windows can't update important files and services while system is using them. save any open ......
    c. If I invoke "Restart now' button, it would repeat to step #a. This is in a loop now. (no more updates are visible in the screen including the hidden updates).

    ReportingEvents.log file:

80070bc9 is the one which is appearing for the past 2 weeks.

Hello and welcome snvasanth try this Windows update error 0x80070BC9 with windows 7

na d it may be worth while installing the Microsoft Readiness Tool.

The error you are getting seems to be related to an Office program too - have you just installed one recently or updated it?

Anyhow the Readiness Tool is worth getting anyway.

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition (KB947821) [November 2012] from Official Microsoft Download Center

    (He's already run the CheckSUR :) )
here appears to be an access problem with one of the Registry hives.
Please run teh following commands in an elvated command prompt, and post the results...

    DIR C:\Windows\System32 /AR /S
    DIR C:\Windows\System32\Config\Components
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\Config\Components
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\Config

    post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

    Hi ICit2lol,

I had tried all these things before. Did try them one more time.

Guess I Might tried 100 different things that I found in Google. Nothing has helped. Same status yet.

    Thanks,

That all looks normal - in which case, the problem may be in the registry itself.

Please run the following commands and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKU
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" /S

    Hi Guys,

I could not even repair the system.

The current configuration is Win 7 Prof 64bit SP1.

I could not uninstall SP1 from my computer (since I probably deleted the backup files a year ago).

The media that I got from DELL is Win 7 Professional 64 bit only (not SP1).

When I try to upgrade it says the current version is more recent than the version you are trying to install.

Also the COA that is on my BOX corresponds to Win 7 Prof 64bit only (not SP1).

    Question:
As I cannot uninstall SP1, I won't be able to able to use the Media (Win7 Prof 64bit) that I have for upgrade. Can I borrow a Win 7 Prof 64bit SP1 media from elsewhere and try to upgrade? If so, will my current COA product key be compatible with Win7 Prof 64bit SP1 media?

    Thanks,
    Vasanth

You can do a repair install with a downloaded SP1 ISO/disk - see Repair Install
Your COA Key will be fine with SP1.
