Unless I specifically say that commands need to be separated, copy/pasting the list is fine (and a lot quicker than attempting to retype them yourself! )

OK - we need to create a new registry Key, but I suspect that the first attempt will fail (but if it works, it's a loss of hassle avoided!)

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands (Use copy/paste - there's only three commands!)

    REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version"
    REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version" /v 6.1.7600.16385 /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %SystemRoot%\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-trustedinstaller_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_ed02252b66d7bca2
    REG QUERY "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version"

    Post the results.
then reboot, and run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt window - post the results in another reply.

    REG QUERY "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version"
    NET START TRUSTEDINSTALLER

Like I said, that was to be expected.:)
I was hoping that we wouldn't need to go into Regedit ( I always avoid it if possible, it's all too easy to make a total mess, and there's no Undo option)

First, try creating a System Restore point

Then open Regedit (Click on the Start button, and in the Search box, type REGEDIT and hit the Enter key - accept the UAC prompt)
    Navigate to the
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
    key.
right-click on the key, and select Permissions
    Click on the Advanced button
    Click on the Owner tab
    Highlight Administrators in the box
    Click on Apply
    Click on the Permissions tab
    Highlight the Administrators entry
    Click on the Edit button
Put a tick in the Full Control/Allow box - this should put ticks in all the other boxes in the column.
    Click OK out (3 times)
    close Regedit

Now run these commands again in an Elevated Command Prompt window, and post the results......

    REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version"
    REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version" /v 6.1.7600.16385 /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %SystemRoot%\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-trustedinstaller_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_ed02252b66d7bca2

Before I follow the directions in post #83, do you want me to first run the REG QUERY command from post 81? Thanks

After completing the steps in post 83, the issue is now worse. Instead of getting to 18% of a elevated scannow, it goes stright to "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I have tried "Microsoft's System Update Readiness Tool" as advised here: Fix Windows Update and other problems with Microsoft's System Update Readiness Tool | Wilders Security Forums

    I have the CBS log.

I have tried the solution here, however the key exists: Windows Modules Installer Error:126 - Microsoft Community

Other thread with BSOD issue is probably resolved after updating drivers: Unknown BSOD on Mother-in-laws system

    Suggestions please.

    Cheers
