Windows could not search for updates, 8024402C (Win7Pro x64)

    Getting error code 8024402C.
    - I've followed SevenForums Windows Update Posting Instructions
    - I've also followed troubleshooting instructions at Windows Update error 8024402C
    - Have turned off my AV (Avast Internet Security) temporarily to run updates - no good.
    - I am not on an WSUS Administrator-controlled system, where WSUS
    - I've uninstalled Dell Client System Update, which I suspect may have contributed to the problem, since it updated on its own about the time I started experiencing problems.

I am running Windows 7 Professional x64. Machine is a Dell Latitude E6500 series.

Attached are a zip file of my CBS logs file directory and a screenshot of the Windows Update error dialog.

Thanks for any help you can provide!!

Start with this - it often works :)

    Open Windows Update
    Click on Change Settings
    Select 'Never Update...'
    Click OK
    exit Windows Update
    Now open Windows update again
    Click on Change Settings
    Select 'Update automatically'
    Click OK
    exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

Noel - Thanks for response. No joy with that, though. I am still getting error code 8024402C.
I also ran the MS Hot-Fix (Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working).
I've been using wireless to do updates. Will try a wired connection (with A/V off) to see if that works.
    Thanks!

Looking at the CBS log, you seem to have a deep-seated problem - that appears to have been around since at least the beginning of November.
I have suspicions that the CheckSUR tool actually failed in a non-obvious manner - 72 seconds for the scan is a very low number (unless you have an SSD??)

I'm monitoring another thread with a similar problem at the moment - unfortunately none of my efforts on this type of problem have produced positive results as yet, so if you can afford to wait for a day or two, it may be worth it.

Noel - Thanks very much for help. I have gone through multiple steps to attempt to fix this, and am beginning to wonder if a reinstall of Win7 (or possibly clean install of Win8...just not sure yet if I'll like Win8).
Some more data that may be helpful - somewhere in my diagnostics, I remember seeing that the last 'successful update' was on 12/4/2012. That happens to coincide with the date that I (foolishly?) allowed Dell Client System Update to run. I still have the Dell Client System Update and a Dell Feature Enhancement Pack (that did not run successfully) folders in enumerated folders (e.g., '{2543FF....}') under %systemroot%.
One of steps I took was to uninstall my Avast AV. Since that hasn't had any affect, I am going to reinstall, especially since this doesn't look to be resolved soon.
Let me know if you have any additional thoughts or diagnostics you think I should run.

    Cheers!

A repair install would probably be the quickest way to fix the problem - I'm not getting any clues in the other thread, yet
One thing I haven't been able to work out yet - is your system updated to SP1 yet, or not? (it's possible that installing SP1 would fix the problem - but it may also make it worse).

If you are in a hurry, then a repair install is probably the way to go. - see https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
