Any chance you can remember which add-on it was?
Good luck!
Sorry, unfortunately not. I practiced extremely poor troubleshooting technique and disabled a bunch at once. I was getting a 'webpage object error' popup. This is not my PC and I suspect this is why the owner switched it to Chrome in the first place.
Maybe I spoke too soon. I was able to install 30 or so pending Windows updates with no problem. I uninstalled a nearly expired copy of Norton 360, installed AVG free in its place and noticed when shutting down that I had a pending Windows update. I chose to install and received the failure popup. The error code this time is 80070490. Any suggestions?
Thanks yet again.
Uninstall AVG
reboot
Run the AVG Remover tool - http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities
reboot
Run the Norton Removal tool - https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home
reboot
After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command
NETSH WINSOCK RESET
You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
then try Windows Updates again.
If it fails again, run SFC and CheckSUR and post the results.
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)
Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file
Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply.
Ooops! - meant to add in there.....
Install MSE after running both removal tools.
Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware
Sorry for the delay...work interfered. I uninstalled Norton and AVG last night and ran the stand alone uninstallers as well. After that I installed Microsoft Essentials and attempted to do updates. Win Update said I had 9 pending this morning. Eight of them actually installed but the ninth failed with the same code as yesterday. I proceeded to run SCCANNOW and received no error message ("no integrity violations"). About an hour ago I downloaded and ran CheckSUR, log file is attached.
Thank you.
No errors in the CheckSUR report.
Please post the CBS.log file anyhow - there may be errors in that which could point us in the right direction, which don't throw a message at the time.
Other than that, try downloading the update from the Download Center (use links that you get from right-clicking on the update in Windows Update) and installing it yourself.
post your windowsupdate.log file (C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log) and I'll take a look - not that I'll understand much about it!
I wasn't able to do what you asked regarding following the links when right-clicking the file..i had no option to go anywhere from there. I was right-clicking from the windows update screen, reached from via Control Panel...you must need me to go elsewhere for that.
I've attached the update log for review.
Thank you.
This is the one you need, think...
Download Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2761226) from Official Microsoft Download Center
