I cannot rename the original file, nor can I replace it with the new one. Something about the file being open in System.

Thanks for the explication, Tom - it begins to make sense :)

Frondar, please reboot, and try again - that may clear the 'block'

Of course that was the problem.

Now the SURT appears to take very long to finish. It's been an hour and it didn't take nearly that long before. Good sign?
I'll leave it a few hours more and hope it will finish.

    Update:
It's been close to four hours running and no progress.

    Hi Frondar,

Close the SURT then. It usually takes a while, but 4 hours is just too long. Could you post the CheckSUR log please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

It might give us a few clues why it failed.

    Hi Frondar,

Looks like the SURT hadn't frozen, it was just doing a lot of fixes - 9000 to give you an idea of why it took so long!

Could you run it again please? If it takes the same time again, cancel it and upload the log as before please.

( there's still 3,500 unfixed errors there - look at the bitflips, as well! )

It's running again. I'll give it until I go to bed tonight. Unless it's done before of course. :)

The cross linking between different keys and values in the COMPONENTS hive is so complicated (I still can't work out how some things relate to eachother) I'm hoping that a few fixes here and there will mean that a few more can get fixed elsewhere on the next run, ultimately leaving just the bitflips at the end. Admittedly, I'm not hopeful but there's nothing to lose I guess :)

All right, it finished up nicely. (Five hours.)
Fingers crossed for a happy log.
