I hope you enjoy sorting everyone's lives out for them! Otherwise I feel really guilty :) The service sort of starts, for maybe 2 seconds a green bar shoots along... and then an error pops up. I've screen grabbed it below.

EDIT: Sorry here are my MGADiag results too!

I think I know what the problem is :)

Please run the following commands, and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\spldr /S
    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SPLDR /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_SLSVC
    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_SPPSVC

    They may show something

(have you had Norton software installed?)

I'm so jealous of your knowledge! Thank you, once again :) I have had Norton installed before, McAffee and AVG but I've uninstalled everything except Microsoft Security Essentials, now.

    The queries, as requested :)

    GOTCHA!

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    SC CONFIG SPLDR start= auto

    (note the space before 'auto'!)
you should get a 'success' message.
reboot, and run another MGADiag report.

Then we'll try and clean up the mess left behind by your older AV's.

It's one of the standard error patterns - but it's been a month or so since I last saw it, so I'd forgotten it.

Your report looks fine now - you shouldn't be seeing the notification any more.

    Now for the cleanup operation....

Download the AVG Remover from here
    http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities
Follow the instructions for running it, and then reboot the machine (whether it asks for it or not, and whether the program rebooted already or not).

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

when complete, reboot whether the tool requires it or not.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
    then post another MGADiag report.

I COULD KISS YOU!! A gazillion updates have just kicked in and stuff! My computer is alive again!! I've downloaded the three removal tools, I'll close everything down and run them and then complete the rest of your instructions and post my results! I just wanted to thank you before I did that! YOU ARE A GENUINE GENIUS!!

I am extremely happy!! I've been trying to fix this for two years, and not one person had a clue! Everyone followed a few steps said "Oh yeah, you're screwed! Call MS..." I used the removal tools, and installed all the Windows updates... I'm very happy :) Thank you so much!! Here is my MGADiag result.

This was almost certainly a result of using and uninstalling Norton - it has a nasty habit of leaving settings lying around, and messing with things that it 'didn't orta be'!
