52 Updates. Will not download.

I have a laptop that I've not used for many months and today I attempted to action the updates finding that there are 52.
I have tried to get those moving but they keep stopping.
What can I do to solve the problem?

Try selecting 4-5 at a time, reboot, go to the next 4-5.

ask me first if I want to download updates
do you have a .reg file for the "ask me first if I want to download updates" setting? I presume it wouldn't duplicate any registry entries if run at every startup...?
