No problem at all. It's been baffling me for months :)

Did you manage to reread and get any new inspiration? I tried to enable extensive logging for Microsoft installer via some tips on the Microsoft website and run the update again to see if that produced anything but it appears the update fails very quickly, before even a log entry is created (it almost instantly told me it failed).

Would it be any good if I tried a repair installation using the installation CD?
