    Windows Update error code 80050005

Ok every time I go to try and update it wont let me and I get the error code 80050005 as shown in one of my attachments.

Now I tried doing the sfc /scannow but its says "windows resource protection could not start the repair service."

I have also noticed in my registry when you go to "HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows" there is no windows update option.

I have included the CBS thingy along with 2 screenshots.

Hello shlackinfrackin and welcome to the forums

Open your start menu, and in the search box type regedit, when the results load, right click on regedit and select Run as administrator. From regedit, I would like you to navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

Right click on the Component Based Servicing key and select Permissions. Click Advanced, then select the Owner tab. On this list, click on your username (e.g. Mine is displayed as Tom (Tom-PC\Tom)) to select it, tick the box labelled Replace owner on subcontainers and objects then click Apply then OK.

Now, in this first permissions window, you should see a few entries in the Group or user names: box. Click on Administrators once to select it, then check that the Full Control (Allow) box is ticked, if it isn't then tick it. Then repeat this check for TrustedInstaller. Then click OK, and close regedit.

Then reboot, run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT), and upload the CheckSUR.persist.log please!

    Hi shlackinfrackin,

    Thanks, that's perfect!

Open your start menu, and in the search box type regedit, when the results load, right click on regedit and select Run as administrator. From regedit, I would like you to navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Then right-click on Component Based Servicing and select Export. Save this file to your Desktop, name it whatever you want with a .reg file extension. Close regedit and find this .reg file on your Desktop. Right-click on it and click Send to > Compressed zipped folder. This should create a zip file with the same file name as the .reg file. Attach this to your next post please. If it is too big, which is very likely, then upload it to:

Well there's our problem! At this stage, I'll hazard a guess at two embedded nulls preventing anything from reading any of the sub folders. Just to give you an idea of what you're currently missing, your registry export has 21 lines whereas mine has 42657 lines.

    RegDelNull Scan

Please download RegDelNull from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    1. Right-click on Regdelnull.zip and select Extract All... then, when the window appears, click Extract.
    2. Upon completion of this, it should open a folder containing the extracted files. If not, this folder can be found on your Desktop
    3. Copy (Ctrl+C) the file regdelnull.exe and Paste (Ctrl+V) it into C:\Windows\system32\
    4. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt.
    5. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
    6. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the following command into it, then press enter to run the command.

      regdelnull -s

    7. This will scan your registry for embedded nulls.
    8. If it finds an embedded null, it will ask you whether you want to delete it or not. Do NOT do this! Press n then enter.
    9. Repeat this until it says Scan completed.
    10. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Notepad and click on it
    11. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.

    Well there goes that thought!

Could you please confirm whether this key exists in your registry please:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect

If so, could you right-click > Export it, then attach it here.

    Hi shlackinfrackin,

I was afraid you might say that. Unfortunately, your registry is damaged beyond repair so the only thing left to try is a repair install:

    Repair Install
