I can appreciate the frustrations you're feeling - but it really isn't Microsoft's fault, since they can only act on what they know, and the cannier vendors will undersell until they maximise their profits. The recent release of Windows 8 probably produced a flood of counterfeits onto the market as 'stock' was sold off, and this in turn triggered a rash of new blocked Keys.

Since my copy of Win 7 Ultimate has prooved to be counterfeit and will be deleted as soon as I can transfer my data to another pc, I would appreciate it if the other machine (Win 7 hp MAR) could be checked out in case of problems in the future. If anyone is willing, I will post the data.

This code is from Win 7 hp MAR which I bought on Ebay from a German company with nearly 6000 sales and about 98% feedback. The disc does not seem to have stickers and the arrows on both sides line up. I have two copys from this company, the other is at the museum where I am a volunteer for all the volunteers to use.

This looks OK - it's an OEM System Builder key so you should have the matching COA sticker, and the disk should be marked 'only for installation on a new PC'
A Google search gives no hits (always a good sign!)

Thanks everyone for your help, I doubt if I'll be getting a complimentary copy of W7 from Microsoft as I was unable to give them much info on the vendor. The counterfeiters really had me fooled, everything looked so good. I am deciding whether to load XP pro or Linux Mint in place of the defunct W7.

I just checked my emails and there was one from Microsoft saying that they will send me a complimentary copy of W7. I didn't expect this and would like to say thanks very much to Microsoft.

They are usually pretty forgiving - and I'm glad that this was the case here.

Note that the license is ONLY valid on the affected machine!

    Have fun with it.

I have already removed and reformatted the C drive so does this mean that the licence will work with a fresh install or not? In the email, Microsoft mentioned a "complimentary software replacement kit" which I take to mean software plus a product activation key. The only change I will be making to the affected pc is a different hard drive.
