It may or may not stop it updating (it will probably depend on the update concerned).

There's still another file that needs replacement - and the four reqistry errors need attention once we get everything else right.

    I've uploaded a file - rosad.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\rosad
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\rosad
    or
    DIR E:\rosad

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\rosad <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file, and run another CheckSUR report and upload that log as well.

If both are clear, we can work on the registry.

Good - just the 4 registry errors remaining.

It's too late to post the instructions for fixing those tonight - I'll do it in the morning.

Hi Noel, thanks for all your help! Your skills are now legendary!!
I thought I would summarize for anyone reading this post and its conclusions.

Original issue: Windows 7 Home 64 would not update to SP1.
All the standard usual fixes didn't work.
Posted the issue on this forum having read the posting rules first!
One whole days work from Noel and myself the issue is resolved the PC updates and runs very well.
I can't believe that I had to go through it all and that an expert would give up their time for someone
    they don't even know...

    This is an amazing resource!!

    Thank you!

    Ooops! - I knew I'd lost a thread somewhere!

You say that everything is working as it should, now?
    That's good to know!
For interest - please run another CheckSUR report, now the system is (presumably) up to date, and we'll see if those registry errors have gone.
