It's not out-of-band :)
This is the 4rh Tuesday of the month - the day for auxiliary non-critical updates.
Is it important? - possibly.
Is it critical? - no
Is it necessary? - that depends on your usage.

You'll need this update to be offered IE 10.
I assumed it was needed for IE 10, but it's not.

Just received the Windows update for this today (Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)) and had to immediately uninstall.

Killed Firefox 19 and Explorer 9.

It may be OK with Explorer 10 but I don't want to be forced into updating and using Explorer.

Firefox is my primary preferred browser, so until it's fixed will not be installing this update.

I have also just installed KB2670838 it and it crashed IE9 - I had to uninstall this 'update' and now all seems ok again.
Do you need this update BEFORE installing IE10?
Thanks

It's probably the add-ons installed that are causing the problem (toolbars, anyone?)

I do not have any toolbars installed on the ones I did
I am wondering if that would make a difference
