I *think* this may show something....
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands... Code:

Thanks very much for the help, when I fire up and Administrator command window and type in the first line, I get the following error. What should I do next
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\john>REG LOAD HLKM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS ERROR: Invalid key name. Type "REG LOAD /?" for usage. |

That looks like a normal user-mode command prompt.
To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt. Also - I tend to forget that most people have never looked in the folder even with Explorer, so they don't have permissions to run the command. Please open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\config folder and open it - accept the offer to allow access. Then close Explorer, and open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the commands again. |

I did exactly what you said (to the letter). But I still get the exact same error message. I checked and there is a COMPONENTS file in Windows\System32\Config I can see that file and I can type it out (althought it is binary) from the command prompt that I get the error in

OK - I think I'm going to have to have a look at the COMPONENTS file myself, and play with it.
Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file to your desktop and compress the copy. Once compressed, you can try attaching it to your reply here - but it may be too large for the forum, in which case upload it to your favourite fileshare site, and post a link. |
