I finally ran into a problem with Platform update KB2670838 and IE10

Other than the problem I am going to describe I have had no other problems with my machine, IE10, FF19 or Opera12.14 and I would like to solve this or else I will have to perform a system restore. With this being a new update I have not found a match to my problem here or on the web.

The problem has to do with managing attachments here on SevenForums.

When I click on the browse button if I want to upload a screenshot or picture to a post I am making here on SevenForums the resulting Open File window only shows 6 of the 32 picture folders I have in my Pictures Library, 81% of the Folders are missing.

• All of my Documents are listed.
• All of my Music is listed.
• All of my Videos are listed.
• But 26 folders in Libraries\Pictures are missing.

This behavior only occurs in IE10, whether or not it is in Enhanced Protection Mode.

In FF19 and Opera12.14 everything is there.

• All of my Documents are listed.
• All of my Music is listed.
• All of my Pictures are listed.
• All of my Videos are listed.

• I have gone through Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs to see if there were any changes to the IE settings, but IE looked okay.
• I checked Properties\Securities for the four Libraries and they are the same.
• I also went over the Tools\Internet Options\Advance Tab settings in IE10 and they look okay to.

Would it have to do with security, and the fact that Manage attachments opens a new window?

Any Ideas? I'm stumped.

That is an option. I want to know what is the cause, and if there are other options.

In the meantime I have ran sfc /scannow, that came back with no integrity violations.

I'm posting the CBS log, but I'm not sure if it will be of any use because the log starts a day after I installed KB2670838 and IE10.

MS have finally realised that there is a problem with this update - and are working on it.
They will either block it from machines likely to be affected, or update it (or both).

For the moment at least, uninstall it and hide it.

I tried. It hung at Preparing Desktop for several hours. I hope MS offers it again as a repair to the first one.

This post is not in reply to Ms. Bradley, but a post to share my experience with KB2670838.
I would like to ask Ms. Bradley to check the WindowsSecrets Forum, and PA Bear to look at other Forums and see that this update is causing more havoc than just stopping Browsers from running, and it is happening on more than just hybrids, my machine is a Desktop.

Users are unsure whether or not KB2670838 is a pre-requisit for IE10 on their 7 machines. I installed it before installing IE10, and when I did install IE10 there was a short check at the beginning for "updates", No doubt IE10 would've installed KB2670838, "silently".

I would like to try and understand why this update has an effect on a call for a file through MS's IE10 browser, my machine run fine, my browsers run fine except for this one feature in IE10. Can either of you explain why?

As of 10:30am est 03/02/13 I checked my updates, guess what I have both KB2670838 and IE10 waiting as "Optionals" the date is 02/27/13

The one's I installed (KB2670838 and IE10) was on 02/26/13.

The problem appears (from what I hear) to affect only AMD graphics cards/chips (and probably only a subset of those).

things will shake out over the next few days - so expect a v.x update to appear once you've hidden the current one.

Well the deed has been done....

I went to a restore point 3" (minutes) before the install date of kb2670838 and I am now back to IE9, but the nefarious kb2670838 is still listed as "successfully installed", and the IE10 update has disappeared from updates, but kb2670838 remained as an "optional update". I did hide it so we will just have to wait and see until MS decides to offer it again.

I did notice in the hours of this morning before I ran the restore that the visiual display of fonts was starting to degrade.
Heavy (bolder) on the bottom of the fonts, and a slight rainbow effect of the fonts. IE9 remains steadfast.

Noel, did you get a chance to view my CBS log file?

The Update History is exactly that - a history.
Check in Installed Updates instead

That's just it, after tried to uninstall it last night and pulled the plug when it hung at Preparing Desktop, I didn't see it in "installed updates", but I did see this in system restore:

And,
I now have the same problem of missing picture folders in IE9 when I'm calling for a file to D/L'd to this post through the IE9 browser.

I was using IE9 to make this post, and when I went to D/L the attachments, those same 26 folders were missing, so, I switched over to FF19, and I'm finishing this on FF19. Opera is also unaffected.


I have the digitalriver/now go to dell and use theirs .iso. I think I'm going to get ready and do Greg's Clean install.

I'm tired, and I have a long way to go....
