Lets see if it's residuals from old AVs....
    (removing potential default AV residues)

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

    when complete, reboot.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

    then try Windows update again.

Ah - Carbonite is something I know nothing about.
Try disabling it for the duration?

    I wonder....
Please open Device Manager - enable viewing of hidden devices.
What entries are showing with yellow or red flags? (your DVD should be one)

Is this the correct screen? It says that the F drive isn't working but it is just a media card and I can read it.

    No
    Click on the Start button
In the Search box, type Device Manager
The DM will open after a few seconds
In the toolbar, click on View then Show hidden devices

Uninstall both devices from Device Manager (right-click and select Uninstall - if it asks to remove files as well, say no)
    then reboot.
Wait 10 minutes, then re-check Device Manager
